Default Tape safe for paint

I have to transport my car about 500 miles on an open trailer. Not sure if it will rain but I have to prepare for it. I havnt put the top on it because the one time I did it scratched the paint around the ferrules.

I have seen guys tape the nose of their car for the track to prevent chips, etc. What kind of tape do you use to protect the paint without damaging it from the adhesive? I think if I put a tape barrier where the top hits the paint I should be OK?

Recommendations....

PS I tried using cloth in the past and it did not work.

My guess would be 3m blue painter tape. The stuff you use for latex paint on sheetrock.

Do a Google for "Road Wrap" http://www.buyroadwrap.com/

It is a clear sheet tlike the 3M stuff but made for temporary use. I have used it on SPFs to transport on open trailers and it works great.

We used it after Carlisle to "button down" the tonneau on the 289 FIA prototype to prevent the tonneau from chaffing the paint. I also just used it on my everyday ride to seal the moonroof when it went Fubar and was not closed fully on a rainy day.

Good stuff!

I have a piece of black static cling that I cut to shape to lay on the paint the shape of the top contact area. It is about 4" wide & does a perfect job of protecting the paint & when I remove the top I just roll up the static cling & store it in a zip lock till next time.
there is no need to fit it around the furrels, just nick it @ the tip of the furrel & push it over
