Well, the GoPro HD worked great for the Gasholes at our 24 Hours of Lemons race at Buttonwillow last weekend...we ended up blowing our engine the first day and rebuilt it by tearing it and another junker motor down right on the pavement and morphing the parts into one motor...ran again on Sunday until we got too many black flags for running off the track and/or forcing a car off track (that would be me).

The Gashole Mustang...our guns jammed.

Here's some short videos...

Hey, the guy in the green car was going slow! I got a black flag for this.

Morgan LeBlanc going offroad a bit...he got a black flag for this.

Me going offroad too.

Check out this custom roll bar mount specifically for a GoPro. They come in different sizes.

I have a Canon movie camera. From what I can see online it doesn't look like the GoPro roll bar mount is set up with the standard camera tripod mount (bolt hole), is that right? Where can I find a "bolt hole" type roll bar mount? Is their an issue with using another movie camera besides the GoPro?

It cannot be a hard drive style camera. I had a Sony and it would shut down as soon as the car started to move.

I just ordered one of these for my JVC Everio (SD card) camera.

I'm hoping that it'll stick to the rear cowl well enough. The camera has image stabilization, so I'm maybe it will compensate for any engine-induced shaking on the mount.

Weather-permitting, we'll test it out next week.

So how many minutes can one record? How is the battery life? Where so you buy this guy? Who has the best rollbar mount?

Should I be concerned that the only way to contact this company is by email? What if I have a problem?

One 16G card (level 6) at the 1080p level recorded over two hours of LeMons action (see above).

Goggle HD Hero GoPro Camera and you will find there are lottsa places to buy.( and a variety of prices)..they've sold thousands and there are a lot of guys here that have them....and they have been around for a few years. find a shop you can visit and look at one and ask a lot of questions. Get the motor sports kit.

Bob, a company in NYC, B & H PhotoVideo, that I have purchased from via mail order, no problems. Do not know how competitive their price is on the GoPro HD

Ward:
I use an IO Port mount on the roll bar for my Canon Elura video camera and it works well since it's infinitely adjustable. I posted a sample video on another thread at:
Camcorder and mount
I use a protective piece on the roll bar to prevent the clamps from marring the finish. Cost about $2 to make.

Those studded snow tires sure seem to work good.

Now that's a cool camera chase vehicle....

Seriously, I would like to get multiple GoPro's so that things like the little passing thing in that video I could then get the car as it's next to and moving in front. Maybe two more. The only problem I see with the GoPro's is that they are super wide angle, which is good in some cases and not so good in others.

Brent,

Great video ... the motor does sound very nasty indeed! You did a good job keeping your foot out of the throttle and the car pointed in a straight line. Just wait till the weather warms up and you get that baby out on the track ... then you will need Jamo's chase car !

It's the only thing McQueen could use to keep up with the Porsches and Ferraris.

Yeah, i've tried using the different formats to narrow the field, but it really doesn't help.

Brent,

A 'standard' video camera might give you what you are looking for, to augment the video from the GoPro. I have not used one yet, but understand that Sticky Pods work well.

http://www.stickypod.com/car_camera_mount.html

They are supposed to hold even heavy cameras, but one would need to be careful not to scratch the paint with the cups. What would be cool is multiple cameras, that have external microphone inputs, that are fed all the same audio from a high quality microphone, that is out of the wind, but captures all of the sounds from the car. I hope the next generation 'GoPro' cameras have an external mic input. The end result will be different views from the car, but with a consistent wind noise free audio track.

Tim, now that is weird!!! I was just looking at them...I have a Canon 5d MKII that I use for more professional video and have been thinking of utilizing something for that so went searching....Just got done figuring out that I would like to save a couple pennies and get the stickypod director setup. Good minds think alike I guess!
