Interesting, I'm just surprised I didn't see the Flathead in there. That's what started everything! Major snub!

I was wondering how they came up with 10, I was thinking of engine families. Including the flathead, I'm not sure there are 10 "families". The flathead probably wasn't included because it was focused on HP production engines. There were no factory HP flatheads, although the aftermarket tweaking of the flathead laid the groundwork for production HP engines.
I counted how many engine families there are(Ford,Lincoln and Mercury, excluding truck engines) and I think that excluding the 6s and 4s of various configurations, there are 10.

Its a load of bollocks, look at the description of the 221/260/289, all those motors shared the 2.87 stroke with respective bore sizes of 3.500"/3.680"/4.00", then later it goes on to say the 302 was due to a larger 4.00" bore when it was the 3.00" stroke that increased it to 302 cu in.
Must be a lot more than ten engine familys for ford when you include the english/ german/ & australian variants

Back in 62 I was driving a Fairlane with a 221. The B&S was 3.5 by 2.87. The article is incorrect.

There were a couple that really are/were outstanding:
1. 427 Cammer
2. Flat head
3. Romeo 605
These should have been in the list.

There are many inaccuracies in this article, as others have already pointed out. Autotrader needs to better check its research.
Since the article was really entitled "Ford's Most Significant Mustang Engines," the absence of the flathead V8 and the Y-block V8 makes sense.

As usual another opinion.I remember the flathead simply because I heard about them all the time and several people I know had them when I was a lad.The Cammer was not mentioned.It really does not matter,I have owned all my favorites except for the Cammer and the Boss. |
