That's because there are no lock washers!!!!
Brent, if you are going to do many of the LS series engines you need to get a couple of the Snap On TechAngle torque wrenches---3/8 drive goes to around 75# and the 1/2 drive goes to 250# I think--they can be set for the torque value plus the angle, will beep and show you the torque and angle reached---little bit $$$$$$ but something you need if doing work on these engines----
Wait till you get to the dampner bolt!!!!!

I figured you'd have some good tips and tricks on that Jerry.
I've got a 402 on the stand and an LS2 sitting in the shop to do...it spun #6 rod bearing, ran the lower bearing shell up under the top bearing shell...
I think I'd like to stick with Ford stuff....

Brent--they are neat power plants---We (son Corey) does the tuning for the Nickey Chev guy on the new Camaros---
Snap On part numbers are Atech2fr100a and Atech3fr250a for the 3/8 and 1/2 -----
1/2 is kind of heavy and doing all the head studs while torque plate honing them is sort of a work out, but when you get to that dampner bolt it is really needed-
look them up and check e bay---

Patrick: Use the ARP bolts, flat washers and 262 Locktite, you won't have to touch it again until it's time for a replacement. If you aren't using one already, gIve some thought to a Mini starter, you'll have more room around it. But your Post count will then suffer....

A CVR starter? I thank you not. My original Ford starter exudes classic and timeless beauty. It is a Rembrandt among Warhols. That beauty is a fine taffeta gown and you would have me replace it with a leather-studded mini-skirt? The thought alone, replete with all the connotations it draws forth, is simply repugnant.

Ok, my bad.
In that case, I'll run up and help you put the new cast iron flywheel, Toploader, and iron heads back on thing you call a Rembrandt...

If that's what you want to call 100+ year old technology that still gets the job done, then okay.
Since you are Mr. Detail, you may want to address that shoddy battery connection while you are at it. Looks like it needs to be soldered tight and heat sleeved for protection from the elements. You disappoint us, Patrick...we thought you were better than that.

Here we go... it looks to be a tad different than the standard half moon wrenches.

That is someones after thought for a poor design. I honestly have not seen one of those since High School Auto Shop. I think they have all been melted down with th abundance of high nickel FE 427 blocks.

Is it me or does Patrick know a lot about women's clothing?
Patrick, time to upgrade to modern smaller lighter weight and more-technologically advanced starter.

We used to torque the cylinder head bolts on two-stroke SAAB's using just a socket with scrib marks on it. Initial torque was 50 ftlbs, then 90 degrees, bring up to temp and let cool down then do another 15 degrees if you had the nerve (the bolts would really start complaining). SAAB used 13 cylinder head bolts on the 850 cc two stroke (vintage 1965). Still have my scribed socket.

Robert:
Those were a real barn burner, 3 cyl 2 stroke, blue oil smoke out the back...where was the EPA. Now they require Catalytic convertors (at least in Kalifornia) on Weed wackers. Go figure

Rick,
Wish I still had mine. Good place to put the old engine oil (mine had oil injection 1 gallon tank under the hood, use any 30 weight or so).
