Default Kidney Bean wheel questions

Does anyone know the reason why kidney bean wheels were used on some of the early 289 cars?

Where they just what was available and then were the FIA wheels developed specifically for the 289 car to replace them?

Were FIA wheels used as original equipment on any 289 Lemans car?

My reading has led me to understand that the wires were not living on cars that were raced and the power of the 289 led the team to switch to Halibrand's kidneys. The wires were kept for street cars.

Might have been a supply problem but the FIA's replaced the kidneys for competition cars.

Werks or original owners can correct me...

Tire development was still in its infancy (increasing widths) and the FIA wheels as we know them were not yet created. The Kidney Bean design was a carryover from other narrow tire class racing, even Indy cars of the era, although they may have been a larger diameter wheel.(??) They first appeared on some of the early comp cars, prior to the FIA cars being created.

I remember a thread some time ago where this spinner issue was visited in excruciatingly granular detail. That would be a good winter debate topic that may result in an emergency room visit for glass in your eyes.

Did I mention it's mid-70s in Orlando today?

Looking back at some old pictures of CSX2136 it seemed to have FIA's and not the kidney beans also red and not black? I don't have my original registry to reference, a friend is using it....

Hard to say what is OEM and what is not as these cars take several changes over the years and bodies, motors, color, wheels and appointments changed. A friend of mine owned one of the 427 comp cars and thought that it had been fixed, restored, 7 times. Probably as a light ally car with a big engine on a race track is not the formula for lasting very long.

I love the kidney beans, hard to find and when you do they are a little expensive. I also don't think they come in anything other than 6 pin?

CSX2136 (which is pictured above), CSX2137, and CSX2138 all raced originally with Kidney Bean wheels. As they moved into later '63 and the '64 seasons, they were all raced at various times with FIA wheels because they were more readily available and were wider. Once they started putting alloy "comp" girling brakes on cars (fia and cutback door team USRRC cars) the Kidney Beans could no longer be fit on the car because there were clearance issues. Kidney Beans have a lot of structure on the inside and were balanced by screwing washers to the backs of the wheels. Since I am running alloy comp girling brakes on my repro comp car, I needed to have PS adjust the backspacing to accomodate the big brakes.

Allen, not sure about wheels yet. Trying to make up my mind.

Mike, I'm glad you shared that about clearance. I had no idea. Was the clearance problem radial or on the face or both?
