Default Question on a Dragonsnake

I don't want to start any trouble or question anyone in a public forum since I'm not and expert on this topic. A friend of mine went to a car show this summer and saw a dragonsnake. He is very knowledgeable in hot rodding. He approached the owner as he wanted to see if it was the real deal. The owner claimed it was. If someone is interested in helping me find out for sure, please pm me and I will give the web page so you can look at the picture and let me know.

This snake had 427 tags and I thought a gentleman in Texas had THE lone 427 in a garage. This show was in NH so I really question this claim. I had a long conversation with Gus Zuidema's brother Buddy at a Putnam CT cruise night, so I just have a hard time believing the claim.

A correction is needed. There were two factory Dragonsnakes, CSX2019 and CSX2357. There were four factory prepared Dragonsnakes for customers, CSX2248, CSX2427, CSX2472 and CSX3198 (the only 427)
Any others, including CSX2093, were street cars that customers prepared as drag cars using parts from SAI and/or elsewhere.

Thanks Fred
Gus is well known in our area and we still talk about his accomplishments. He could build one mean engine. His son is a circle racer. Its nice to know that the car is in good hands.

Hi Jim,

You posted: "A correction is needed. There were two factory Dragonsnakes, CSX2019 and CSX2357. There were four factory prepared Dragonsnakes for customers, CSX2248, CSX2427, CSX2472 and CSX3198 (the only 427)
Any others, including CSX2093, were street cars that customers prepared as drag cars using parts from SAI and/or elsewhere."

Just to clarify, in my book on page 50 there is a sidebar entitled "Complete Dragonsnake list by Serial Number" that shows the following (as you suggest):
Factory Dragonsnakes: CSX2019, CSX2357
Factory-Prepared Dragonsnakes: CSX2248, CSX2427, CSX2472
Ind Prepared Cobra Drag Cars known to date: CSX2075, CSX2093, CSX2109

On page 77, I list CSX3198 as the only factory 427 Dragonsnake, and also discuss the two known privately prepared 427 Cobra Drag Cars- CSX3159 and CSX3336.

The list of CSX numbers posted by Dwight and credited to my book were taken out of context, and I made sure to list them by proper designation (ie, factory, factory prepared, independent "Cobra Drag Cars" etc). I certainly appreciate being given credit by Dwight, just wanted to clarify that I made sure to properly list all incarnations of Cobra Dragonsnakes/ Cobra Drag Cars. As we know there are some important distinctions when it comes to this stuff!

Best regards,
Colin

Sam Pack in Carrollton, Texas has 289 Dragon Snake CSX 2109 along with CSX 3198 427 Dragon Snake. Here is a nice web page to his car collection for those interested in seeing some real nice cars... http://www.packautomotivemuseum.com/sampack.html

I believe that the wheels on the yellow car are spline drive American Racing items. I suspect that they are rare, although a good friend and fellow Cobra Club member had them on his 289 back in the 70s. I've attached a pic showing them.

It's interesting to note that the Harr Ford 427 ran the 6-1/2"/8-1/2" FIA comp wheels instead of the wider Halibrands found on the SC and Comp 427s. I have to wonder whether it was a coincidence that the Hoppe/Motion 427 drag car ran the same combo. Carl Mentz (who owned CSX3159 in the mid-70s) and I worked a deal in 1974 wherin I traded that set for two 9-1/2" Halibrands for my 427.
