Hi Guys,

Just a quick update on "Shelby Cobra Fifty Years." The official release date is October 22nd, but as I sit here with my advance copy in hand I am happy to announce we are well ahead of schedule. Books should be shipping to customers by the end of September!

The end result is spectacular, and my sincere thanks to all who offered photos and their support.

The book is available now as a pre-order through Amazon, Amazon.com: Shelby Cobra Fifty Years (9780760340295): Colin Comer, Carroll Shelby: Books , and for anybody that would like a signed or limited edition copy through Colin Comer Books

If Club Cobra members are interested in a group buy, I would be happy to help work with the publisher on this- although it is really hard to beat the pre-order pricing that is on Amazon right now.

Thanks again for your enthusiastic support!

Best regards,
Colin Comer

My copy has been on pre-order from Amazon for months now. Am looking forward to receiving it soon.

Is there any way to know if any of the pictures we submitted were used in the book? If so I would be inclined to purchase a special addition...if not then I would opt for the standard.

Thanks,
John

Dang, you would think that if you were kind enough to let them use a picture of your car royalty-free, the least they could do is toss you a free copy of the book.

I agree with patrickt.....

Mainly because I am one of those guys that did supply
pictures royalty-free.

Best,
BC

Maybe I should have held out longer or hired an agent who knows how to negotiate.

Comer stated in this thread that owners of selected cars would be contacted for release of materials.

So I guess that means you're basically SOL for the free book?

Patrick,

Sorry that my offering to publish photos of Club Cobra member's cars in a beautiful coffee table book has somehow offended you and a few others. If you look at my post #13 in this thread you'll see a little more of an explanation as to exactly how these books come to life.

I'm the author. Motorbooks is the publisher. As the author, I, like you, have to buy the book as well. The difference is you can get one for under twenty-six bucks on Amazon right now. My copies cost me a lot more, since I had to pay for the 300+ vintage photos that were used, and for photographers to take others. Putting in a chapter on continuation and replica cars was my way of including a very important aspect of the Cobra World. In fact, I fought for this chapter. Won't bore you with details but suffice it to say some people didn't want anything but Shelbys in the book.

Hopefully the folks from Club Cobra that ended up with their cars in the book will be as thrilled to have them in there as I was to be able to do it. I'd love to put them all in, unfortunately space limitations and quality (file size, etc) of the submissions were limiting factors.

This is my hobby, not a profit making venture in any way, shape, or form. All I can ask is that you reserve judgment until you see the book. Fair enough? And if anybody wants to print a similar book I'd be happy to donate photos of my cars, free of charge, and I will buy multiple copies

Best regards,
Colin

Colin - he just acts 'somehow offended'. It's a two-roll-bar thing, I think.
My order is in.
Cheers,
Glen

There is little or no money in publishing now - thanks to sales outlets such as Amazon and the rest. To sell a book like that for under $26 is madness. Will somebody please let me know where the profit is??

I agree. I went to Amazon this morning to order, and couldn't believe how cheap it was. You guys really do it as a 'labour of love'. All the better for us, so thanks Colin and Trevor!
Cheers,
Glen

The fact that the book sells for so little only argues that "simple courtesy" would dictate that the publisher (not the author) give contributors a courtesy copy. They are essentially saying "Even though this rag only sells for a few quid, we're still not giving you one -- but thanks for the free use of your pics, we really appreciate it." Am I wrong?

Yes, I can hear it now... "the fact that we included your replica in the book at all should be thanks enough."

Well I for one think you are wrong Patrick.

I would be honored if my car was in a book like this. Why in the world would I expect a free book? Did I do anything to earn it? Did they offer a free book as part of the request for pictures?

I think the magnetic field from your rubber wrapped dual rollbars has affected your mind.

If you don't think it would be good manners to provide contributors with a complimentary copy of the finished product then you were clearly raised in a barn.
