superformance heater problem

heater is making a loud vibrating humming noise on hi, low works fine but hi really makes loud noise is this normal for these heaters. it blows heat just noisy, any advice would help.

Mine doesn't make a loud noise on high and I haven't heard of others complaining either. Do you belong to SCOF? If so, you might want to post there for some technical assistance.

Clearly your cammer motor runs too smoothly. Just joking. No, mine makes a bit more noise on each successive setting, but nothing like you describe. Loose blade, out-of-balance blade and contacting a shroud are what come to mind.

If it's under warranty, have it replaced, the "squirrel cage" is bent or out of balance.

good info, is the heater hard to get to, and not a member of scof i think it has a membership fee, im too cheap for that

Ever hear the phrase, "Penny wise and pound foolish"? Trust me, the small fee to join SCOF will return itself many times fold in information and assistance.

I'm same as you when it comes to SCOF. My heater makes a lot more noise on the highest fan speed but I think that's just because the fan motor is pushing some serious air at that speed. The HVAC assembly itself appears to be right up against the inside firewall and looks like it might be a bit of a pain to get to. Saying that, the heater fan motor extends through the firewall and into the engine compartment directly underneath the right fender, at the firewall. I would turn the fan on at the various speeds and put my hand on the heater motor itself and see if I could detect a noticeable vibration on the higher speed settings. If I did, I would immediately call Lance Stander at Superformance in Irvine, California and ask him if my warranty covered repairs or not. If not I would ask him to walk me through the process to remove and replace the fan motor and fan assembly itself. I suspect (and could very well be wrong) that you can get to it quite readily after removing the glove compartment.

its not under warrany but great info timsullivan, i fugured it was just more air being pushed through also, never heard another heater on, so really didnt know what to listen for

why join a club for money when u can ask all these nice folks on here for free or just call lance, id rather put that money to charity

Tim, I believe that would be the wiper motor. The heater is one complete unit.

Does this "process" work for you when your daily driver needs servicing and you call your local dealer?

Seriously, I've heard some pretty incredible stories about how the SCOF members bend over backwards to help people with issues like this one. Some of the really hard core guys (they are actually master technicians and work on these cars for their livelihood) will even request your phone number and CALL YOU to discuss it. Sounds like it's worth it to me (someday if I own an SPF it will be a no-brainer decision).

Seriously? You spent no tellin how much on your SPF and you are too cheap to join SCOF? WOW WOW WOW

No offense but the "nice folks here" have about 1/10000th of the info and experience with SPF as the members and "technicians" on that forum, no skin off my back, you dont know what you are missing

like i said on this site ive talked to randell for free or picked up the phone and asked for free, he runs scof, ill donate my coins to charity and use the old free system, thanks for all the info on heater,

charity begins at home...you should make your first donation to the guy with the broken fan motor.

I've got lots of good friends over here that drive every type of replica and there are some very, VERY smart guys here....BUT.....for Superformance specific issues, the brain trust is over on SCOF. It might cost a little bit to fish in a stocked pond, but you'll surely catch a bigger fish faster....

Randall is a great guy. Nobody knows more about Superformance. Nice guy. Runs SCOF. I am sure he will talk to you and help you for free. Like I said, great guy.

But I would ask you to reconsider your decision not to pay for a membership in SCOF. It costs money to run SCOF and the members chip in. Randall used to pick it up by himself. Not really fair. Club Cobra is a great forum with people who know a lot. However, the people on SCOF specialize in Superformance and know more about it than anybody. I consider myself quite fortunate to have an organization like that supporting my favored brand of car.

Sounds like an out of balance or a bad bearing on the heater motor. Put your hand on it when it is on high and you will be able to feel if there is a vibration or scraping sound. If so, you'll need to remove it and see if you can manually fix it or call SPF and get a new one.
