For those that are keeping tabs on SB-100 numbers for 2011, my car was just issued #289.

According to Jody at the Santa Clara DMV, she was told by the Sacramento office that there are 'several numbers' left.

So ... as of June, there are numbers available. If you are looking to start the process this year there is still time.

good to hear they are only in the low 400's

I should be getting my MSO next week, my car won't be ready until next month. I understand that if I have my MSO and all my receipts I can head into the DMV and secure a SB-100, correct?

any other advice on what to take and what to ask?

You probably are not going to have a problem but it is close to January anyway. With times the way they are now there is not a lot of SB100"s needed. The way it used to be you needed to be at the DMV the first day they opened after the 1ST and hope you got one in the first couple of hours. Not like that anymore and who knows if it will ever be like that again.

Advice,

Have everything organized and easily accessible, keep a smile on your face & whatever you do, don't piss them off.

If you already have your paperwork you can go now and get your SB100 sequence number. It will take about 2 weeks for you to receive the actual number in the mail and then is when you set up the appointment with the BAR. The bar will not even hardly talk to you without a sequence number.

Do I need my MSO or just my chassis and engine receipts? and any recommendations of DMVs up in the SF Bay Area that are noteworthy in terms of knowing the SB-100 regulation?

Don't know where you are at in the Bay Area but from what I understand Santa Clara DMV is very well versed on the SB100 process.

I was at the Santa Clara DMV today reviewing paperwork for my car (ask for Jody she is very knowledgeable & helpful), and out of curiosity asked if there were still SB-100 numbers available. Jody said as of today (12/14/11) the answer is 'yes'.

Don't know how many numbers, but looks like a similar situation as last year ... I believe there were numbers still available in December 2010 as well.

I got my sequence number, CHP vin verification, brake and light inspection and was told today that I need a weight verification certificate before DMV will issue me a Sequence certificate for the BAR inspection. Long process!!!

Amazing. Definitely a sign of the times that you can get a SB100 sequence number anytime you want. If your Cobra isn't legally titled in CA, you've got no excuse and you're taking your chances.

Weight verification certificate? That's a new one. Where do you go for that and what form is that?

Darren,

Please let us know the details, first I have heard of a 'weight verification certificate'. I plan to be going through the inspection process soon and it sounds like one more item to add to the list.

Wow. When I read this it reminds me of the nightmare I experienced in 2004 going through the SB100 process. Back then and maybe today, the DMV seemed to invent barriers and new regulations for getting a car titled. Just part of the wonderful Kalifornia experience. In 2004 I did everything according to their long list of demands and still never got my title. In fact the DMV sent me a letter advising that my car was illegally titled and told me to send back the plates, registration documents and they would refund my fees/taxes that I had paid. Then they told me to basically hide my car as it would be forfeited to the state if found on a public right of way. I was told that my car was not going to be registered in Calfornia because some other guys tried to cheat the system! Somehow, this made me a cheater too. Well, after more than 11 months of letter writing, personal visits to the DMV and much hair loss, I finally got it registered. I must again thank Steve Rosenberg (a regular poster on this site) for helping me navigate the DMV process back then. I still owe him a beer or three!

So, even though it may be frustrating and seems like a bunch of run around busy work, just do what they ask with a smile on your face. They really just want their money and will tax anything including labor and in my case taxes already paid. (I understand this part has changed). Also, they are very concerned that your "gross polluter" will be killing birds, small children and increasing the temperature in the state. So, again, just do what they ask, in the order they ask it and be prepared to be frustrated and mad. Smiling helps alot as does some single malt scotch after you get home. Ultimately, you will prevail and be able to drive your car on the wonderfully maintained streets and roads of the Golden State.

You could also do what I did and move to Arizona and avoid 90% of the grief about cars and other Calfornia regulations.

Getting an SB=100 and getting a new kit car titled are two separate things that are often combined (naturally). It is the title process that is lengthy and complicated, not the SB-100 process. There are many barriers to getting a properly titled car. Once you have the title, the SB-100 is easy.

You can find a scale in any town to get a certificate. Trucks get weighed before they get on the road.

Also find a DMV where the clerks know what they are doing. Sacramento and the Bay area have a couple that are really good to work with. Remember the DMV is a Govt. operated business and most of the clerks aren't trained in this and some of them never even heard of it. The web site will give you the papers that You need to have filled out and ready. They mainly want the big ticket items such as motors, transmissions, and etc and the price that you paid for them and the kit so they have something to base the value of the car on. Get a good clerk who knows her stuff and it isn't that hard, but get one like we have up here who hates cars of any kind and it is impossible.

Weight verification?? I wonder if who ever told you that has your car confused with the requirements for a Big Rig. The sb100 process applies to trucks that have been rebodied as well as home built cars.

The top of your paperwork will almost always list out what needs to be done prior to registration. If someone at the DMV tells you you need to have your car weighed, blow it off if it isn't listed as one of the requirements on your docs. They aren't going to ask you about it again if it's not listed.

I know for a fact that the DMV doesn't always list out the brake and light inspections as a requirement. You can walk in, point to the list of requirements and tell them you're done. Most of the time, they don't even look up at you.
