Default Speed tip: Black sidepipes are definitely faster!

I just got back from road testing the Cobra with the newly painted black VHT sidepipes. I've been wanting to paint them black for quite some time and on the weekend I finally up and did it.

On the test drive, I flogged it around some quiet, twisty up and downhill roads near my home and let me tell you - the back end sure seemed to snap around quicker than before on those second gear exits. Maybe I was just a tad more frisky with the gas pedal, or maybe it was the fumes from the curing paint, but my seat of the pants sez the car is faster now and I'm sticking to that story.

So for those of you teetering on the fence about blacking out the bling, go for it - lose those sissy shiny sidepipes. Not only will the Cobra look a lot meaner, I say it will be faster too!

I might add, as I slowly recover from the adrenaline high (or maybe the paint fumes) that regardless of whether you choose blinged-out or blacked-out for your pipes, there aren't many cars that can make crusty ol' dudes laugh out loud and feel like telling a story after a short 15 minute drive around the neighbourhood.

Interesting statement, "those sissy shiny sidepipes." It seems that chome and flash may be on it's way out. I've talked to both my sons, who are in their middle thirties, if I should chrome my roll bar and the quick jacks. Without hesitation both said, "no way, paint them black."

I totally agree. I would never install those "sissy shiny sidepipes." Way too much bling for me. My pipes are black and I'm very proud to be a non-blingy non-chrome kinda guy.

Spray paint cost less than chrome polish.....
and its a lot less work....

About 10 seasons ago, I had my polished stainless coated with Dupont 800 black ceramic. It's held-up well but the stones have caused chipping in the coat and it dulled from satin to flat.

How does the VHT hold up? I know the black lasts but will it flake and chip every season? Is blasting first the only helpful thing for adhesion?

I was thinking more like "Undriven."
(Note: I did have my car out and about both Saturday and Sunday).

Chas, mine were shipped off and coated by the shop that did my install. I wish I had their name in my notes, but I don't. The shop that did the install said to just get them flat black, since they will always go that direction anyway. Mine have held up very nicely with car residing in garage.

Thanks but the coating guys did a very through job -unlike your car, 100 MPH stones have taken their toll over time...

I assuming guys with VHT just redo them every couple of years, chips and all???

My experience also says black side pipes are faster. That's because my muffled street pipes are shiny ceramic, but my straight-through track pipes are BBQ grill black. I think the forward thrust of all that noise exiting out the straight pipes at full throttle must be good for at least two or three MPH. The only time they seemed slower was when I had to back off the throttle passing the microphone used to identify cars exceeding the track's noise limit.
