CSX3178 has been noted as the "host" for Shelby's cars....with shots of the body on a stand during that time frame.
But Kris has the first-person insight and I would take his input.

Ron, it would be great if you and Kris could sort out the facts and let us know what's what here. I don't have access to any of the peopple or documents to do this myself. I'd be happy to accept whatever you guys can determine, as fact.

This just in, from the good folks over at SCOF...
Apparently the body for the Superformance MkIII was originally based on the Contemporary Classics Cobra replica, which itself was based on CSX3045.
Jimmy Price ended up making several important revisions to the body shape, both to address some imperfections in the Contemporary body and to improve some of the aesthetics. Click here for the full story.
I imagine this could end up being a very familiar story. That is, that many of the replicas we enjoy were themselves based on other replica makes, instead of original Cobras.

So if the CSX4000/6000 fiberglass continuation cars are based off of CSX3057 which is a completion car with a Kimmins body, what was the Kimmins body based off of?

Yep, it would appear so. I don't know where Kimmins got his panel bucks, although IIRC he has restored many originals over the years.

Great thread resurrection. I thought the HiTech cars had 2 versions depending on when it was built (fiberglass vs Aluminum tunnel, etc)....
When D'Antonio was building the earlier ones (mostly all fiberglass cockpit) I am unclear what they used to mold the body. Later, when Tim Gunning was building them, they used 3190 to mold a whole new car. I believe most (possibly all) of those had aluminum floors/tunnel. It is certainly not definite, but my understanding is that MOST of the cars that start out with VINs "HTR" are the earlier ones, and the "HTM" are the later ones. Again, I don't think it's a crystal clear distinction, but it gives you a starting point. Along with sharing the name of the current South African facility making the CSX cars there is a lot of serious confusion when it comes to HiTech Cobras.

Just on the SPF:
It was CCX 3080 which was brought into SA in the late 80s by Mr Cohen. I don't know how often the car changed hands before I bought it from Richard Ransome.
Jimmy P told me the story. The front fenders were changed if I remember correctly. CCX's came further out and down.
I don't know if the mould(s) were changed later. SPF do look different to me than CCX.

Not a CSX, but based off an 61 AC ACE 2.6, or so I was told many years ago (I'm thinking mid 90's) by someone who was friendly with John Tojerio in the UK.

Which mold looks the best... I wonder how they chose the car to splash off of, or if they had to use whatever cobra owner would let them copy it...

I've often wondered...if you had an original Cobra 289/427 or an original GT40, all worth way more than the cost of a really nice house, why would you allow someone to splash it?
Maybe some owners didn't know what was being done....?

I can say with personal knowledge that HiTech's molding of CSX3190 was a full molding directly from the original car and not a measured or partial copy. It was done with full knowledge and permission of the owner during it's restoration. I don't know about others though.

The Kirkham's owned the one they splashed I believe so that makes since to use their own car, but if they had a choice of all the originals I wonder which CSX has the best lines and most even from side to side...
