Question transferring title Florida to New Jersey

may be transferring a two-year-old backdraft titled as a 65 in Florida to New Jersey title do you think there will be a problem? Will I end up with a 65 title in Jersey?

Thank you
Dennis

More than likely you will get a title with the year the car was given a VIN number.

I did not see the title myself yet, but I believe he said it states 1965 Rouch cobra.

I will ask him again tomorrow.

Thank you

I hopefully will get a copy of the title faxed to me.

it supposedly reads 1965 roadster.

what if I just take the copy of the title to the New Jersey DMV and see what they say.so I don't get stuck with a car that I can't register .

You need to do a little more diligence and find out how the car was titled in FL. If the car was legally titled in FL as a 1965, then you should be able to take the title down to DMV and transfer it into your name and get a 1965 NJ title. If the car was not legally titled in FL as a 1965, caveat emptor. Couldn't hurt to get a copy of the title and bring it down to your local DMV and see what they say.

thank you much gentlemen for your replies.

The car was purchased new from backdraft racing in Florida about two years ago.

I didn't think this would be a problem but I spoke with Jay at vintage in Connecticut and he said there's a chance it would not go through.

So I called back draft in Florida and a very helpful Reg explained that Florida has some type of sema law that allows you to register a reproduction car as the year it is reflecting.

And this vehicle was properly registered there as a 65 roadster, but he is unsure of New Jersey's current laws.

just thinking about it though a recent Vin number would be quite a bit longer than a Vin from 65?

from the link above
it seems like I can just convert, but I sure would like to be sure

The main issue is going to be how they handle the emissions test or not. You emailed your senators right in support of the new bill?

if its face value I guess it's 65 requirements.

There must be some definitive answer I would think.

I found this information but it's more for registering initially I believe

If FL has a SEMA law and the car is legally titled in FL as a 1965, you should be able to transfer the car to NJ and have it titled as a 1965. At that point, you are subject to 1965 emissions, which means you need a PCV valve.

To add to this, you still need to respond as to exactly what the title reads as I posted above. Only then will we be sure what NJ will say. If the word replica is mentioned at all, then most likely (with 95% certainty) NJ will make you go through it's current "pre inspection" process like any fresh build. If the word replica or kit is not mentioned, then they will take the title at face value. Do not however expect to get "QQ" plates for it, as that requires you to send in pictures of the car to the special title/plates division and that could throws up a red flag that gets your new NJ title revoked, or an audit to find out why you did not pay the proper sales tax on a true "1965 Cobra" value.

AGAIN!!!!

How exactly does the Florida title read?

His registration card should have the same information listed on it.

For what it's worth, I registered my Unique Motorcars Cobra 427 S/C in Nov 2010 after I picked it up.... The DMN ladies (why are DMV staff always women??) were clueless. I had to "guide" them in the Florida law for registering a replica and if the replica is of a 25+ yr old car, it gets an antique tag. They ended up typing in what they want.... so here's my FL Tag info:
Yr: 1965
Make: UNQU (for Unique)
Primary Brand: REPLICA
Body: 2D

One nice "law" in Florida is they allow the yr of the car and an old tag of the same year to be registered.... so I bought a 1965 Fl tag off ebay.... and had it registered to my Cobra. I did the same thing for my 56 T-Bird. (see below)

As Mark has demonstrated... the title from Florida will have the year of 1965 BUT it will read Replica on some portion of the Title. That is the compromise on the SEMA legislation (rightfully so). This is why I cautioned you on the registration. Bill appears to be offering the same insight and he has registered more of these in NJ then anyone I know.

and I thank you Jay, I had no clue about this.

Contacted the seller he was at work to ask about registration card, will let me know this evening hopefully.

So most likely unless there was a oversight the title will mention replica. If so is the situation hopeless for registering this vehicle in Jersey .almost got bit by this snake

Dennis,

No, all is not lost, but it may add extra steps (baby steps) to the titling process.
