Need help w/driven gear install (T5) PICS
Not sure if this should be in another forum, but was hoping to get a quick reply to my problem. Tried searching, but no luck.
I recently installed a new drive gear (internal on shift shaft) in my T5 to compensate for gear ratio change. I also replaced the driven gear. It worked fine for about 100 miles and now it isn't working. The gears ARE NOT chewed up.
I know the cable is good, because I can hook up a drill to the cable and the speedo works. I don't know if I am not installing the 16tooth gear incorrectly or what.
Everything seems to line up, but it just doesn't work. I'm pushing the driven gear over the end of the cable as far as possible and then putting on the clip. HELP!!!

Are you sure the gear on the output shaft (the internal gear) of the trans is turning? How would a guy check that?

You've got the gear on the cable the correct way.
Make sure the little pilot end of that driven gear isn't bottoming out when you bolt it in.
If you want to check if the drive gear is in fact turning (no reason it shouldn't though), jack the rearend of the car up, put it on jackstands, pull the coil wire, and have someone bump the starter in gear. You should be able to see if it's turning up there.

The driven gear "holder" looks different to mine, yours goes in further.
Is it a custom housing, with a custom cable?

make sure that the inside of the gear is not spun out. The square end of the cable fits into a matching square section inside the gear. If the cable was binding at any point, it can round off the edges inside of your plastic gear.

Thank you for the reply gentlemen. As far as I know it's not a custom housing or cable. The car is a B&B, I purchased it used.
I will first make sure the drive gear is rotating, then check to see if the inside of the driven gear is rounded off. I think I could detach at the gauge and spin with a drill and if the driven gear moves then it must be seated okay I would think.
I'll also measure the length of the driven gear on the cable and see if it might be bottoming out against the housing inside.
At work now, but will look tongiht and post. THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!!

Thanks for asking....yes and no.
The problem is for sure with the 16T driven gear. I put on my old 19T and the speedo works fine. Both gears are exactly the same length, same square bore inside, etc.
I ended up putting two marks on the gears so I knew where the flat ends of the square were inside.
I tried the 16T white gear again this time lining it up. Still doesn't work!! Funny thing is that the inside looks perfectly square, it's not chewed up as I expected.
I'm just going to order a new 16T driven gear and hope for the best. Thanks for all your help guys!
16T white gear inside view, appears to be fine.
