Hot Rod Magazine took the two best Shelby vehicles of all time, the 427 Cobra and the new 2011 GT500 Super Snake, to Las Vegas Motor Speedway to find out which is the baddest ever.
Rob Kinnan from Hot Rod and Gary Patterson from Shelby North America race each car on the road course and the drag strip to see which is fastest in the different disciplines. Carroll Shelby tells why he created the Super Snake and shares what his favorite is!
Great post. How many would have predicted that the ol' Cobra would've been faster on the road course? I wish they would have given more detail on the specifics affecting the performance numbers like traction, handling and brakes.

Great video....thanks for posting! The super snake would make a good daily driver, like my F150 Lightning, but hands down, the cobra is the baddest by FAR and I would choose it any day of the week. The fact that that 45 year old technology can spank the new mustang on a road course is the proof in the pudding!

What a joke!!! The 2011 Super Snake is "The best Shelby ever"? The 427 Shelby Cobra is an iconic sports car. The new Super Snake is a very nice, very fast car but it does not even come close in status to the 427 Cobra IMO.
BTW: The launch on the dragstrip of the Cobra was pathetic. With a better launch / driver that car will do alot better than 12.90.
Sounds like the results were rigged a bit. Otherwise, how is 'ol Shel going to sell more of his new stuff? And especially in this economy? And I agree that a 12.90 is a pathetic attempt in the 1320 for that car. A second gear start would have produced a better timeslip.
Can't replace the Mustang tires with slicks and leave the Cobra with vintage bias tires. Let 'em run the same rear tires and see what happens. This is just a Mustang/Shelby promotion.

Take a close look at the video, it appears the oil pressure is dropping on the Cobra as it winds up and then recovers on shift. Engine may be a little loose, next time they need a tight engine and it will smoke the super station wagon. Right around 1 min 34 seconds
Yes, definately a promotional video for the Mustang Super Snake. Even though the Cobra beat it on the road course the commentary was that the "Mustang was just as fast" but "refined and easy to drive".
And I agree with the comments above. That was a terrible launch off the line in the Cobra, and what's with putting slicks on the back of the Mustang but not the Cobra?
A 12.9 1/4mile in a 550hp Cobra? Ha! My wife's 4000lb BMW will do that!
I was running better than a full second faster in my SPF with roughly the same amount of power. Did Patterson dog it on purpose for the sake of promoting the Mustang?
-That would be sad.

12.90 out of the FE powered Cobra? That was pretty weak. Cold tires, sluggish launch, sluggish shifting, and it seemed like the reported "sideoiler" motor was straining just to rev up; what was up with that... Could anyone tell if that guy was talking on his cell phone half way down the track? I don't even have 550hp and years ago ran a half second faster on my first practice try ever on street tires; and many others here in the 11s. Sounds like some blueprinting and tuning is in order followed by a reshoot of the entire video with ONE capable driver testing both cars back to back.

You know, I just don't think those numbers are really accurate. Plus the guy driving the 427 doesn't have any shoulder restraints and really isn't driving it that great (sliding around in his seat!). I think it's great he has a helmet on but that well do little when he's tossed out of the car! It just looks like someone said "hey Joe, wanna go for some hot laps?". I think given a pro driver, both cars would have come out A LOT different.
The new Super Snakes are pretty cool but noticed how many of the "newer" Shelby's are for sale out there at incredibly low prices!! They just won't ever have the same appeal or following I'm afraid of. I'll stick with the old noise maker! I didn't realize HOW much BIGGER the new cars are!! Just me though. Matt

Well, maybe the 427 Shelby version is not as fast as the Superformance version, hahahah - just kidding. This guy had no problem doing a burnout, launching it, winding it up,
and shifting it wide open through the gears. Ended up running 10.70s in this 427 SPF. Doh, I wonder why da Shelby Cobra can't do the same?

Yeah, freeze frame the video at 47 seconds. The mustang had slicks at the drag strip. Not drag radials, . . SLICKS!!! Gimme a break !!!!!
