Default Cobrapack Mufflers?

I've followed many of the previous threads regarding restrictive Cobra mufflers. I’ve decided to take a closer look at mine, not looking good. From the best I can tell, the inside opening is 2.25” at best. So here’s the question, has anyone used the Cobrapack mufflers on their car?
My 428 reads just 326 hp at the wheels, so would I opt for the 2 ˝” or 3” core?
I plan to use the “packed” version either way as it’s mostly street driven.
My concern is obviously an overall horsepower/noise balance. I have 20” bodies today and could stretch them to 22” or 24” if I went to a 3” core. That may slightly offset the noise difference between the two core options. But again, with the relatively small horsepower numbers is the 2 ˝” core enough.

Thoughts?

Default Cobra paks

I removed my stock sidepipes from Backdraft and replaced with Cobra Paks from Classic Chambered Exhaust. RWHP before was 419, after 439, torque went up 23 ft lbs. For the cost and increase it was worth it. Also gave my SBF 408 stroker a much better sound. Thumbs up, this was a good upgrade.

You will see an improvement with the 3" core for a 428. I had the 20" body and went with the 22". Not a whole lot louder until you step on it. If you do a search you will find several threads on this subject.

I have used plenty of sets of the Classic Chambered. I keep them in stock now, they work good and sound great.

I have the 3" on my small block and Lainhart installed 3" on his 487 FE. We both love our Classic Chamber mufflers.

I had 24" x 2 1/2" on my Cobra.

I installed 28" x 3" with the louvers turned to scoop the air. They are a lot quieter. I can now talk to my passenger at 70 mph.

I recommend going with the longest muffler you can. It will be the quietest. For a FE the 3" is a must and turn the louvers open to the motor (scoop the exhaust air).

I installed a set last year. The sound is much better - deeper, smoother, and quieter. A good improvement. Not sure about power production, as I made several changes that winter. http://www.ffcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240604

I like the louvres facing the motor. It gives a nice bass note and quite socially acceptable but when you get on it it really announces what's up. I typically go from 20's to 21's. It gives a nice difference in length to true up the cuts without being in the old weld.

Hey Mike, good talking. I would also recommend the transition cones on the front of the mufflers inside the pipe. Eric has them in stock.

Thanks Nick!

Just ordered 2 Cobrapack 3" X 24" and also added the reducers as well.

I'll let you know how it turns out.
