Default P-51 Cobra Concept

In David Kirkham's skunkworks thread about the incredible billet block project, he mentioned that they had thought about building a P-51 Mustang. The Mustang and the Cobra are two of my favorite machines of all time. Both of them are enduring icons in terms of performance, sheer beauty and the all important intimidation factor and I have long dreamed of a P-51 themed Cobra concept.

The first sketch is of an open cockpit roadster with a semi wrap around windscreen. All of them feature exposed panel seams and rivets. WWll style exhaust outlets and bare panel interiors are also features in all sketches.

The second sketch takes it a step further with a single seat cockpit, aluminum half tonneau and a Mustang-like bubble canopy.

The last sketch shows the single seat interceptor configuration with the rear canopy removed.

Fun concept? Sacrilege? I wish somebody would build it so we can find out!

Interesting concept.

I wonder what he is planning for an engine. V12, or just split the exhaust of a V8 to 12 pipes?

John, I was wondering if anyone would pick up on the 6 exhaust outlets . I put them in thinking it should have a 12 cylinder powerplant for ol' times sake. I wonder if a Merlin could fit into a Cobra's engine bay?

Backdraft has done a number of P-51 themed cars. But they did not take it that far. I like them all.

Any pics Cashburn? I would love to see them.

I'll check out the invasion stripes.

Well...yeah.

That was me driving with the UN penalty flag after Ryan Hubbard got a black flag. I got my own black flag later for "suggesting" that another car leave the track mid-corner.

Our east coast Gashole brothers' 555 has a color combo damn close to your concept. They are gunless wimps.

Buzz,

Great concept drawings! … how do you come up with this stuff !!?!

Yes … the Krikhams should build it!!

I like the exhaust stacks, bet the K Bros could come up with some fancy plumbing to have exhaust coming from all six pipes, and not just from four with two fake pipes tacked on.

Let's see what the Krikhams have to say ...

Fabulous images as always, Buzz!

Guns, rivets, P-51...
It all sounds very familiar in concept to what Rod Hadfield built a while back. He actually used a Merlin engine though. Wild car!!!

Buzz, Is that Bud Anderson and Chuck Yeagers P-51's in the background of your rendering?
