Default Installing vinyl interior question ?

Any of you guys installed vinyl on the back wall instead of the carpet. Thinking about doing it for a change since my tranny consol is in vinyl and it looks pretty good. How did you manage the corners, should I put a bar in the crack to hold the material, have no clue how to hold the material in place besides the glue, thanks
Michel

Michel that isn't a bad job the vinyl is very forgiving to install. It sure helps to have a good second pair of hands to hold it up and off while you work it across. I use Dap Weldwood contact adhesive for that and dashes. Make it oversize approximately to shape and trim out the corners and edges carefully afterwards to size. I have a pic of one of them I did somewhere, I'll take a look.

Michel,
I have a vinyl backwall on my car. It is a Hurricane kit and uses a fiberglass cockpit tub. I glued 1/16" thick vinyl shelf liner (Lowes) to the tub to provide a base and some amount of cushion, then glued my vinyl material on top of that.

I cut individual pieces of the underlayment so I could form square corners. That way when the vinyl went over it, I got as sharp a corner as possible.

The build has an exposed rollbar and the mounts for it presented a challenge. I cut and fit the vinyl then used contact cement and brushes to put down the vinyl, a little bit at a time. It will make you drink large amounts of adult beverages, but it can be done.

The pile carpet on the wheelwells and floor made for a sharp, clean edge with the vinyl

I've attached a photo of the wall, before the seats were installed.

Questions?

Paul

Have you been to an upholstery shop?
You'd be best off with a vinyl with a woven or supported backing, not unsupported (no backing) or a non-woven backing, which is like felt and won't grab well.
Tolex brand vinyl (google it) is used for covering amplifiers and is a good quality vinyl.
Follow the Weldwood directions carefully. The vinyl against the metal won't breathe and you don't want to soften the vinyl too much. Allow a few minutes drying time on each side before laying it on.

My only challenge is to know if I should put a big full piece of padding to cover the whole back wall including the 45 degree sides or cut small pieces for those ones. My roll bars are in the trunk so the wall is a flat piece and two small pieces for the sides at a 45 degree angle like those FFR's. I've seen pictures of guys that installed a full piece and it looked nice,I guess I'm just going to have to try it,thanks for all your comments, keep sending pictures I have time to think about it !
