BINGO you hit the nail on the head Joyridin'...

He said originally it was a 427 side oiler.

When pushed for the engine numbers, etc. he told me it was actually a 428.

Now, if it is a 428, would it still look like the top photo? Do they really look that much alike from the top?

Thanks

Scott

After the first purposeful "fib" I'd walk away from the deal completely, JMO.

The 427 and 428 look the same from the top. Intake manifolds are the same and the heads will bolt up to either block. The big diff is in the block and internals. The 427 is a 4 bolt cross drilled block with #2-4 caps having bolts coming from the outside right above the oil pan. The 428 has a larger stoke crank shaft and a smaller piston. The 428 heads have a diff exhaust port/header bolt pattern also. You can put these heads on either block though. The 427 has 3 head variations also. The low riser, medium riser or the high riser design. They also made Tunnel Port heads, but they take a different looking intake manifold also which is somewhat noticeable right away. I hope this info helps.

There's nothing wrong with a guy dressing up a 390, 406 or 428 to look like a 427, but I am sure there are plenty of guys preying on unsuspecting people when selling these cars. I would not buy a car, regardless of how good of a deal it is, from anyone who started out saying 427 side oiler and then coughed up 428. Where there's one lie, there are many and you know when that will run through your head? At 6k rpms as you shift.

But that's just me......
