Points source for early dual-point distributor
Does anyone have a recommended source (and part no.) for quality points for an early 427 dual point distributor (1963 or 64)? I would prefer something like Accell if available. Considered running Petronix in it but just too many stories of the units and their coils crapping out regularly.
Thanks

A alternate choice is the 6 cylinder points are the same as the duals(if I remember correctly) and also usually just one set actually goes away as the current arcs on the break set and the make set survives.
If you can find them--both accel and mallory were the ones I preeferred

Dan ... you might check with Keith Craft Racing , Barry at Survival etc as to a source for the points . Don at FBO is also a possible source .
I`m running the Petronix in my 63 1/2 427 Galaxie ... and have for almost 10 years and haven`t had any problems . However , I don`t run their coil ... and also carry my original plate with the points and condenser on it just in case . I sent my distributor along with the coil to Don Gould at FBO Systems in Cottage Grove ( 541-942-5920 ) to have it recurved . He checked to coil on his machine and furnished one that matched his specs on rise time etc . You`re right ... the original was junk . Car is much more responsive since the distributor rework .
BTW ... I`ve heard that the newer Petronix systems ( made in China ?? ) have reliability issues .

Dan, are you running an MSD box? If so then you only need one set in the dist. and it'll last almost forever because it'll only be carrying a few miliamps.
Just a thought, Steve

Tim O'Conner hooked me up with some HD points for my DP distributor. Tim O'Connor Distributor Rebuilding and Restoration - Home Not sure what brand they are but very reasonable and a great vendor for parts and distributor restoration.

Dan ... just remembered . Go to the FEForum and do a search on distributors . There is a ton of info and sources for everything from parts to complete rebuilders on there .

If you want the nostalgic look of an OEM Ford distributor, that's cool, BUT do yourself a favor and repalce the inards with that from a mid 70's electronic Ford distributor (fits without any hassle, never any maintenance either.

Keith built my engine but I don't think his guys like dealing with anything but the new MSD electronic stuff. He messed around with it a little but claimed they couldn't keep the points gapped right and gave up and dynoed the motor with a spare MSD unit. They weren't sure where the points they used came from and I just think they didn't want to spend time on it. I checked over the distributor again and I can't see any reason it shouldn't hold dwell - looks nearly new inside and it's tight.
No MSD box. Just points, condensor, ballast resistor and coil.
I'll keep Don in mind if Tim doesn't work out.
Thanks

i used a Petronix points replacement on my dual point to make it easy. Just a thought. Can't tell unless you open it up. Tim can check your curve as well as the distributor components.
