active exhaust systems- quiet when you want it.
I've been toying with the idea of replacing my current sidepipes (a bit ugly, and very loud). I like the loud, but it would be nice to have a quiet, stealth mode option (I know, ear plugs are cheap, but hard to hand out to people as you drive by them in the neighborhood...)
I've seen a few "active exhaust" variable valve systems, that have a butterfly valve that closes at lower RPM to lower sound levels quite significantly it seems. They would for sure require some degree of customizing to work on a cobra, has anyone had experience with either of these, or something similar?

Drilling some holes in the butterfly and just use it as a restriction. Out of the neighborhood flip the switch and have full flow.
Here is another one...

Im not necessarily saying that one, in fact im not sure which one beacuse im not even sure which kind are in mine. I do know that I can drive down the road and have a conversation with someone and dont need earplugs. Its still plenty lound and mean sounding when you want it to be. The original owner said he picked up hp with them but i cant verify that.

I have these;
Patriot Exhaust H3200 - Patriot VaraFlow Tunable Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Expensive, but I like them. Don't know if they could be adapted to a cobra. Maybe. 2 1/2" is a little small for a big block, but it's the only size available.
Essentially a glass-pack with an electric flapper valve.
It just so happens, when at my first track day earlier this month, I got a noise violation warning (exhaust open.) It was incredibly loud, while pushing the engine hard. Much louder than the small block cobras, GT40 replicas, and the new roush mustangs.
Problem is, when you close the valve, it does knock off the engine power. I was about 10-20 mph slower on the long straight. Bad for trying to catch 80%+ of the cars who were supercharged.
Video, with the exhaust closed - as you will hear, pretty quiet, for an FE.
