Side Pipes (again, sorry)!
I have a set of stock side pipes from ERA (not stainless) which I know are very restrictive. My thought is to cut them apart and reuse the turnout and let’s call it the 4" outer sleeve, (that’s what it will turn into) and toss all of the guts.
In place of the guts (muffler) I would like to run a straight 3-1/2" straight pipe with one of the following inserts shown below:
Spiral Turbo Specialties $200.00/ pr.
Vortex Insert Cones $140.00/ pr.
Car Chemistry Shop $120.00/ pr.
I know these have been brought up in other threads, but has anybody actually used either one? Not exactly cheap, not to mention the fabrication and re-coating. Thoughts, comments?

Here is a post from a few years ago:

Contact name is Dave Stuart ( owner ), who was very helpful when the need for a quiet muffler was mentioned. The core is 4" narrowed at each end to 3" w/o any pipe extension, overall length of 30". Dave used a 5/8" center tube with extra baffles to control the sound. Construction is excellent. Turn time on the order was a few days. Very pleased as a 1st time customer.
Price for the pair was $133 + S & H.
Plan is to purchase from Don Scott the header extension to the muffler , the turn out/bracket and fabricate the side exhaust system. Purchased the 3" X 4 feet aluminized pipe from Summit Racing, part # SUM-640030.
Has anyone else installed an auger type muffler ?

Thanks Rick:
The pipes do not have to be quiet. My ERA's are by no means quiet that is ok, even a tad bit louder, just not ear splitting. The goal is to get a big bump in HP. I will give Dave a call and pick his brain. BTW who is Don Scott, I have been away too long.

I used a Vortex cone a few years ago. Can't say it made in differance in power or sound. IMO, it was a waste of time and money.

Jeff,
I cut my ERA pipes apart and inserted Stainless Specialties centers. I got tired of the crackle in my ear from the stock glasspack mufflers and wanted something less restrictive but also needed a change of tone. A buddy just did the same thing on his FFR copying my setup. I can't explain it, but I will tell you this... about fifty or more people have commented on how the car sounds and I'm able to save my ears. It gets louder when you mash it but the tone is much better. Its all in the design. Good luck.

Duane:
Came to the sme conclusion on the cones (even their own people say virtually no difference, made to skirt the rules at race tracks). Are you talking about the "Turbo Tones" from Stainlesss Specialties? Got a lot of good info from the auger type inserts, and also found them much cheaper from Dynatech, same company as the cones:
Dynatech - Auger Style Muffler $30.00/ pr.

You can also try Eric and Classic Chambered exhaust:
Classic Chambered Exhaust Inc. - Home Page
I have built a few dozen pipes with his inserts. Haven't had one complaint!

Jeff-
I just swapped my stock mufflers for a set of Lobak augers and they are night and day compared to the glasspacks. They have a much different sound than the glasspacks and the engine seems to wind up much faster. Lobak makes 2 different sizes of augers- I went with the smaller core set up which they said were slightly quieter than the larger core auger that they offered because I was actualy trying to quiet it down a bit from stock. I am not sure if they are actually quieter than the glasspacks, but the sound is more mellow and much less harsh at idle than the glasspacks, but when you mash the throttle they howl and sound great.

I just changed my sidepipes, and I went with Classic Chamber 3" x 32", install with lovers facing the flow, I love the sound and I can feel the extra power, I had a set of quiet pipes, the kind that have a tube in a tube flow, very restrictive, the new pipes are great, good sound and not to loud. Call Eric, nice guy and he will help you out.

No, not augers. I was really looking at function vs. cost - just looking for the most flow and lowest achievable DB. Its hard to explain until you hear them in person. We did one car with augers, another group of guys did the chambered ones, and the ones I have from SS are a simple and highly functional design. Much more freeflow than augers and a completely different design. When people see them they cannot believe its not super loud. Same principal as chambered but using expansion and contraction of air chambers vs. restrictive baffles with louvered vents or spiraled augers.

I cut my side pipe off and installed the Classic Chamber 3" x 28". I have a 354 c.i. small block, dyno'ed 402 rwhp and 416 rwtq. I know the Classic pipe helped a lot. Great sound but not to loud. I can talk to my passenger at 70 mph.
LOVE them.
