When is a Cobra no longer a Cobra?
I didn't want to hijack a thread from the Good Guys show, but after looking at the pix of the bagged and elongated car, it got me thinking. At what point do you quit calling a car a Cobra? The car has morphed as far as color, engine, transmissions. It has changed in width , wheelbase and qite a few other things I probably don't even realize. So when is a duck no longer a duck and more of a goose?

Good question.
To me that car looks like the early versions of Funny Cars.

redmt, I'm guessing to the guy who built it, its one hellova a Cobra and he is proud as he can be, particularly if it was a scratch build. Sorta like a woman, when is a woman no longer a woman and more of a dog? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've seen a lot of long tall Sally's in my time, but to their husband or boy friends that are the apple of their eye, while some other folks would disagree and call em' dogs. Hey, who knows maybe this guys just wanted something different but with a hint of the Cobra and put his own stamp on it, so how many of us can be held to any other higher standard when it comes down to owning a Cobra? That's what make owning our own Cobra unlike anything else. Purists notwithstanding. IMHO. tin-man

Some are Purists and only a Cobra built during the famed era would be acceptable. Others are happy with a total reproduction down to the last bolt.
On the other hand there are guys like me that are most happy with a hot-rod shaped like a cobra. I enjoy designing and engineering components to make my body shell & chassis in to some thing that will be fun to drive. I love the lines of my Butler body and have changed very little. But everything else is pretty much up for grabs.
I admire creativity so if you want to play with original shape, stretch it, widen it, monkey with the engine, trans, etc, etc, etc. Go for it.!!! You are a purist of another form. Sometimes you create something great and sometimes you don't.
It's a good thing that Carrol Shelby decided to stretch out the 289 in to the 427 style that we love today. I wonder how many purists of the time saw that as design blasphemy?

Can understand a purists point of view we kit car builders hear it all the time. There is beauty in every creation and the stories from the builders is most always interesting.I have built and ridden Harleys, muscle cars, tractors, and other things, that always will bring out the purists to critisize something. At first that bothered me,for many years it has not.I build and own what I like because, what I want has never been available to buy. Some of the worlds best inventions have been inspired for the same reasons. So those of you of the purists mind lighten up.My car is faster than yours no CSX number attached. The best thing about our creations is that we can modify anything and not hurt the value.I feel better!

Please fellas, don't be so sanctimonious regarding these little cars called cobras. There were only a little more than 1000 of the orginal English cars converted by Shelby and they are the "real cobras". All the rest, including all replicas are just as real...real cobras..even the so called contiunation cars are replicas.
So what's the point? the cobra is just a kick ass fun car to build, drive and look at.

Part of the planning before I jumped into this "adventure"
was making sure I didn't get caught up in this age old debate.
When mine is done, no where will there be a cobra emblem,
or reference to "cobra". We are all driving ROADSTERS, some
of them COMPETION ROADSTERS, and which just happen to
borrow some of their styling queues from the 60's ford cobra.
GOT IT!!
If you ever get asked "is it real?", you can answer with confidence
"damn right it's real ... CHUMP!"

Lots of interesting replies. After going back and reading my original post it may have seemed that I was referring to one car in particular that being the one in the picture. I actually was referring to all replicas in general.
My thought is that whatever you have unless it is an original is not a Cobra but a replica of a Cobra. Is it a duck or not? I say not. When people see my car in my shop they ask is it real? Of course it's real, can't you see it? I go on to tell them what I know of the Contemporary and how it ended up here. Is it a Cobra? It's whatever I call it because it's mine. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

That is exactly what I thought when I first saw the photo... looks kinda cool for what it is - sort of a Cobra caricature. Looks like he did a fairly nice job of it. Not what I would want for myself, but if it floats his boat, then, hey, go for it...
I have a specific plan for my car that is different than most of what appears here on CC. I love the beautiful show cars that we see time and again, but after 25 years of planning this project I don't feel that the show dog look is for me. Most wouldn't want what I want. I want a survivor car ... one that looks like it is 45 years old when it is just finished. Better to confuse the masses .
Let the illusion begin !

PDUB, after 25 years of planning you are entitled to build whatever you want and if that be a rat rod that looks all beat up with a rocket under the hood, more power to you, sorry for the pun. Cheers, tin-man
