Snakespitt-Two Guys Building Cobras

Yesterday I read a post by centaur17 about a company named Snakespitt,1966 ac cobra replica kit, Ph. 435-224-3364, that he had bought his car from. The company is here in Utah so I thought I would contact them to check out their car. I am in the process of building a B&B, and am about 80% done and now finishing the bodywork. I met Todd, one of the owners, and for a few hours we discussed their 427 bodies, their frames, and the unique features they had built into their cars. Todd had his car present and we spent a good deal of time going over the car in detail. These cars are strong daily drivers but a few guys have bought his cars to build that they will have more than a 100K into them.

Todd said several years back he had purchased LA Exotics molds and they were perfect. One thing that most guys don’t understand is that the age and quality of the mold is very important. A mold that is old may not produce the same quality of car # 190 as it did with car #60. I have seen other cars where the molds were old and they used clay to fill the voids where the mold was damaged or pieces were missing.

I went over one of Todd’s complete bodies with my hand and was very impressed. The glass was consistent in thickness and the seems were tight and small. It looked to me like the bodywork would be very minimal. Todd said on one body they painted they got it ready for paint in less than a day. I have heard these claims before but really didn’t believe it was possible after working on my body for so long, but on the body I looked at I believed it could be done. Overall I was impressed with two guys that were building a really good product at a very reasonable price. If they were building when I was in the market I would have gone a different route.

Looks sort of FFRish to me. What suspension is he using?

Mustang II type with Coil Overs.

Just a few of the things he has done is built raceways into the frame to run wiring and the brake lines, and then he has this really cool but simple spring pin system to hold the hood and trunk so you don't need prop rods. I wish I had taken pictures of the frame and the other body pieces, but we got taking and I forgot.

The 'glass quality and other details may well be first rate - and that's a step in the right direction, but the rear end is jacked way up in the air and the windshield is too vertical. Those things may be correctable, but some replica manufacturers just don't seem to get that Cobras are low-slung road huggers, not jacked-up funny cars.

The stance and overall look of the car often sets the obvious visual difference between what is perceived as high-end or low-end among replicas.

Buzz, the Windshield is up like that because Todd is 6'5" and as you know builders can put the rake of the windshield at whatever angle they want. The car was not setting on flat ground and the driveway drops off there pretty steep making it look like the rear is up. When he had it on flat ground I thought it was pretty low. Actually lower than mine.

Makes sense Wayne. Having the top of the windshield right across your field of vision could be a bit of a pain. I did realise that the driveway is sloping - I was mainly going by the space between the fender and the top of the rear tire.
But as you say - those things are customizable by each individual builder so I really shouldn't form an impression of the product from one photo. :)

I agree with Buzz, that rear is jacked up too high. It looks like the tire/rim combination may be too big for that car and possibly rubs. That's why he probably has the rear up like that.
Put a normal set of rims/tires on it and it most likely can have a normal low slung stance.
Looks great otherwise!
