It could be heat build-up in the motor. I've had that before I switched to the by-pass regulator and the relay power supply. I've seen the motor magnets actually move from the heat softening up the adhesive holding them in place. They are not fastened by screws. Yes, fuel does cool the pump. That's why Aeroomotive does the inline route. On pumps like the Holley, the heat hurts the motor, which sees very little cooling from the fuel. When I wrote cool to the touch, I meant the motor.

Why on "return style setups?" I thought they had the advantage because the fuel would not heat soak so much in the engine compartment.

I set up my Holley Blue pump seven years ago like Eric. Painless relay and a Moroso return style fuel log/regulator. Runs like a champ. I believe running a deadhead style regulator on the street is asking for trouble. Excess fuel must be plumbed back to the tank to prevent cavitation and heat buildup in the pump housing. Also a poor mounting location (too high) and restrictive inlet and outlet fittings will assure a short pump life. These are basics to any good fuel system but when they get ignored then the pump gets blamed. I've run Holley pumps for 30 years without one issue ever.

It's not about the engine compartment, it is how many times the fuel passes through the fuel pump - the fuel pump is the reason for the heat.
