58 cobra/MGA
don't ask how, but I was given a 58 MGA. So after much exploration, questioning and research. I've discovered that it's a "cobranized" MGA with a 355hp V8. Alright... So what do I have? Replaced the busted rim, and took it for a spin. Thing drives great and is loud as hell. Almost too scared to take it on the highway and open it up a little. First hobby car to divert the little extra time I have.... Is this something I want to get involved with, or should I just invest my time in Gardening instead?

I have seen a couple of MGA's with sb Chevy power and they are unique compared to Cobra replicas. You have something that only a few other people have, drive it and enjoy it.

I would take the time and touch every nut and bolt on the car before taking it out and exercising it much. You don't want something coming loose or off at speed.

MGA spindals, et al, are up to the task of supporting a V8? No flames here, just asking as I have no real frame of reference.

Nice to see you kept the engine mild, make for a better driver.

It's unlikely, but check and make sure it wasn't originally a twin cam. The little oval grills in the top of the fenders will say twin cam. If it is it's worth restoring, if not, have fun and be careful.

Hope you're referring to my Ford in a Healey swap. It's a classic swap and was being done back in the '60s, especially after the Cobra came out. There are a lot of guys who've done it before. My mechanical skills are much like my cooking skills. I can follow a recipe, but am not so great on improvising on my own. I attempted to do this as a "period" style swap, without a lot of body mods, big flares and wide wheels. I was targeting the 271 hp of the HiPo 289 with the engine. I was very happy to see it dyno at 345 at the crank.

+ 1 on this advice ...
Would take an especially close look at the brakes ... Master cylinder, all the hydraulic lines, calipers / (drums ?) and related bits and pieces.
Sounds like a fun car ... enjoy!
