Anyone know where to find the vin on an original cobra frame???

Look at the door hinges and trunk latch. A lot of the 289's had them written on the front spring tower with a white paint pen but I don't know if the 427's had anything on the X-brace or not.

supposedly a rebodied alum 427 from Europe... I am going to look at it tomorrow and get more info. I am trying to be armed and am suspicious.
I was hoping for a number on the frame ??

The VIN is stamped on the shock tower (passenger side) above spring perch.

I looked at it today. It is a part of an estate of which the family is finishing the car to sell.
The owner died and they are liquidating lots of stuff in his collection. It looks to be a totally built car from the ground up. The primary builder was Chuck Gutkie ? of Cobra restorers in Kennesaw Ga and has been under construction for around ten years. Has a Kirkham body, coil suspension, wide rear fenders, and a correct 66 crossbolted side oiler 427 engine.
Will look further for the vin with info you have given.
History not known. Said to be re-bodied and re- framed after an incident in Europe and came back here in pieces??? Family thinks it is worth a fortune and they may be right??? It is very well put together but who knows as to history and legitimacy.

Might be a good idea to run this by some of the saac members that frequent CC. They have most, if not all the dope on these 'Grey Cobras'.

Rebodied, reframed, and built from the ground up does not sound to me like the ingredients for a Cobra worth a fortune.

They tell me on the phone that the # is CSX 3063. I cannot find that number on the car. Is that number accounted for on the registry ???

Interesting. As Ned pointed out in the other thread, 3063 was never produced as a Cobra and left the factory as a bare stretched frame. The car in question here almost sounds like a Kirkham body/chassis with a "CSX3063" tag on it. (or maybe w/o the tag even!)

I physically looked at it today. the vin is CSX 3063 and is in the correct place on right rear of the frame near spring tower . Took a couple of pix as someone can tell me if it is still 6' longer ?? maybe they put the 6" between the front wheel and the front edge of the door frame ???
The center of front wheel to center of rear wheel is 88 1/2" , and measuring the body it is 148" from the base of the front headlight rim to the rear of the taillight lens. I don't know how to post a picture here but i would be glad to e mail them to anyone interested.
It is getting a change of paint color as we speak. Bob W.

Bob,

Regardless of what length the frame currently is, the car never left the factory as a Cobra, just a raw stretched rolling chassis. Having been built up to Cobra specs 35-30 years later does not make it an original. Value will be less than you or the estate believes no matter how you spin it.

I have no dog in this hunt ... I'm simply curious as to the history of this car. I like stories that are interesting and I think this could be one. I'm not intimating that this is a million dollar car. I do think that it is a very nicely built car now in the wrong hands of someone who did nothing to get it and will lie cheat and steal whatever he can to sell it to an unaware soul. This is much better that a typical "kit" car and I think in the right hands would be interesting and fun. If he would sell it for 100K, i would buy it simply because it is interesting, but he will not. I have plenty of of other cars that keep me very busy and space is a problem, but I would make room for this one if it was priced right. Bob W.

I think you should contact SAAC and tell them about the car. See what they have to say. I'm just having a hard time with this chassis being 3063.

I think if it can really be proven that it is chassis #CSX3063,which means it was made by AC Ltd under contract for Shelby American,designed by Ford for Shelby American. I think you have to say it is a Real 1964 or 1965 (whatever it would be)Shelby!! Remember CXS the X was experimental that would make this a Shelby 427 that was experimented on with a body change. Its value will not be as high as well documented from the factory Shelby 427SC but it is a real Shelby 427 and can rightfully claim the Shelby magic and value. If it can be proven it is #CXS3063 and that is a big if???
