Default Low Volume Vehicle Production

This is a bill I just found out about. It would help the kit car industry a great deal. Please write your Congressmen.

Bipartisan Bill Allowing Low-Volume Production of Specialty Cars Introduced in U.S. Congress | Specialty Equipment Market Association

I am having heartburn about this paragraph in the that link;

"Vehicles produced by low-volume manufacturers include replica street rods, customs and sports cars. They are primarily used in exhibitions, parades and occasional transportation. Vehicles included in this new program would meet current emissions standards. The legislation would permit companies to install EPA-certified clean engines. The vehicles could also incorporate alternative energy technology, encouraging green companies to build low-emission cars."

It reads as though the kit car industry would be forced to use current generation engines in order to pass emissions.

Doesn't that sort of kill the "hot rod"? Hopefully, I am completely misreading that.

No, You are not "misreading" but did not read it completly. It does not apply to "kit" cars, that stays the same. This refers to complete, factory built cars sold as complete, drivable automobiles (think GM, Ford, etc.) that are offered for sale.

Also note that the bill references "American" manufacturers, not Poland, South Africa, etc. Now if a roller is completed in the US that may qualify it but we need more and better detailed information.

This could be a game changer and would allow some really interesting cars to be sold in the US. The UK has had an automotive cottage industry forever and now possibly we too could savor a wider palate of automotive treats!
