Question Fuel compatible sealant?

My gas tank filler tube is welded to a plate that bolts to the top of the tank. I've tried making gaskets out of cork and rubber, but I just can't seem to get the thing sealed. What sealant should I use that won't melt from the gas fumes/contact?

thanks,
Pete

Is it an oval shape. Like what is use on most fuel cells approx 6"x 9 "? Mr Gasker & Fel Pro and others make a gasket for it. If not as described check with Circle Track Supply vendors. If it is a one off (home made design) use thin sheet cork and use a leather or rubber punch to create necessary bolt holes.

PSB,
Permatex Aviation Sealant "Form a Gasket". That stuff works. Just apply it on your connecting surfaces (metal, cork, any combo). Never used it on rubber actually but I have on cork and aluminum and it sealed perfectly. It was also submerged in gas and was not a problem.

It's a rectangular hole. The tank is custom that came with the kit from Hunter Kit Cars. The permatex stuff is probably what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Pete

I used Permatex Motoseal on my tank. Tow years and no leaks.

A search for the Permatex Aviation sealant took me to Aircraft Spruce (duh! why didn't I think of that to begin with...). They've got a bunch of different fuel tank sealants. I think my tank is primarily leaking through the bolt holes, so this should work:

AEROLIFE POLYPROTECH FUEL TANK SEALANT SINGLE COMPONENT from Aircraft Spruce

Contact with gasoline will soften it. I tried it on the neck of a fuel tank and it leaked within a month.

Motoseal is the correct sealant to use. Like Matt, no leaks after a couple of years.

Pete, Seal-All. See this thread Brake Fluid Resistant Sealant for Girling Reservoirs it's even impervious to brake fluid and it's easy to find.

Any auto parts store should have it. Seal-all works as well but I prefer Moto-seal because it stays flexible once it sets up unlike Seal-all.

Something maybe easier to find is:
Permatex® Hylomar® Universal Blue Racing Formula Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant

Non-setting and non-hardening at elevated temperatures. It withstands rapid changes in temperature and remains flexible and tacky even at high temperatures, allowing repeated disassembly and reassembly in high performance applications. This no-run formula seals surface imperfections on machined flanges and is vibration resistant. Temperature range of -60°F to +500°F (-50°C to +260°C); resists engine fluids, including water, coolant, gasoline, lubricating oils, kerosene and some refrigerants.
Suggested Applications: Thermostat housings, differential coverings, hydraulic drives and motors, gearbox assemblies, intake manifold assemblies, oil, fuel and water pump housings and seals, fuel injectors and fuel pumps, transmission and torque converter seals.

Great! I was resigned to having to mail-order something. I'll give it a try.

If I were them, I would change their labeling. It really has the "As Seen on TV" look and is kind of gimmicky -- but the stuff really does work. I think if they made it look "more industrial" people might believe that it really does what it says it does.

Agreed. The 'look' begs the question, "what does this stuff do that Permatex hasn't nailed?"

Product placement apparently . I checked the local Autozone, O'Reilly's, and Advance. They all had Seal-All, but none of them had the Permatex Motoseal.

Lack of availability might be caused by anticipated liability if misused by average wrench. Go figure.....

SEAL-ALL is the best and they sell it everywhere. I tried everything to seal my gas tank, nothing worked until I made a heavy paper gasket (Auto Zone -gasket kit) and Seal-All. It's been perfect for 4 years now..no leaks. I even use it on a "pesky fuel leak' at my gas filter canister top bolt...stops it everytime. In fact I carry a tube in my tool box to help my friends with fuel leaks....HEEE!
Give it a shot!

Same here on the Seal-All. Used mine with a cork gasket on a gas tank leak that wouldn't stop no matter what I tried.

3-1/2 years later and no leaks. (knock on wood)
