Default "How much did you pay for that?"

I was raised to be respectful and have a bit of couth, but I've been shocked by how many strangers flat out ask me how much I paid for my cobra

Has happened at least a half dozen times in the month I've had the car and again this afternoon at the gas station. I would never imagine asking a stranger how much they paid for anything, I don't know, am I off base here or is it normal to be so, hmmmm, direct?

I don't tell them what I paid for the car, but I will tell them the approximate price to buy a new one with the same drive train and modifications.

I don't think I have been in a conversation about the AC in the past 5 years where the person talking hasn't come right out and asked, "So, what's this thing worth, anyway?" I always say since it's not for sale, I haven't checked.

Default If You Can Say It With a Straight Face...

The last time that happened to me I told the guy "It's a replica -- I ordered it off the internet from China. It was only a couple of hundred bucks, but it took forever to get here." Of course I said it seriously and with an absolutely straight face. The guy was not sure whether I was telling the truth or not.

Reminds me of when we traveled with our boys.....they'd ask "How much longer before we get there" and I would always say "Five more minutes". Make up an outrageously low or high price and put the stupid ball back in their court.

I have been asked many times as well how much does it cost, and my standard answer is it's on par with the price of a new Corvette.

An admittedly vague answer to a somewhat nosey question, but actually a fairly accurate answer. I just checked and for 2012 the price is from $49,600 to $111,600 (Coupe to ZR1). I would suspect that the majority our cars would fall into that range, exactly where depends on many factors … let the person that asked the question figure it out ...

good answers guys. I tend to give the answer John eluded to and have said "it depends on how you spec it out, could cost $50K or over a $100K depending on drivetrain and options". usually is enough but I still find it weird people are so shameless. It's the equivalent of someone saying "Hey nice watch, how much was it?", ah none of your business...

I understand where you guys are coming from and not stating what you paid for it.

I usually respond with, "Less than you think most likely."

Then I ask them to guess. Then I tell them 23k.

Doesn't bother me one bit when people ask that question. It's natural to wonder the value of something. Especially when you can see the gears turning in their head wondering if they could somehow swing one.

LOL, I've given out a few already. this thing is a hit here in California. We may need to brainstorm opening up a West Coast Vintage-Motorsports. Let me know if you get motivated and I can rally my SF network for some fund raising

When people have the gumption to ask I have no problem telling them. The purchase price of (in the case of Shelbys) are easily researched and obtainable anyway.

Like the OP, I was not expecting the "how much" question as often as I'm getting it...and I've just been showing people at work pictures, I haven't even had it out yet!

I've taken this exact route. I tell them what I have and where they can find pricing information.

My solution is to just not drive the car. You get no questions that way.
