What are the Down sides of Transferring a Replica titled as a 2007 to Va

Hey folks,

I am about to pull the trigger on an out of state 2007 Cobra Replica. Got the title info today and it is title as a 2007 Ford. With a Note that it is a 1966 Replica. While VA law seems to allow you to originally register the car as the year it is replicating, I believe if the existing title states its a modern year, then I will not be able to get the DMV to title it as a 1966. Anyone else in Virginia have a Cobra Replica titled with a modern year? I am assuming the personal property tax is going to bite me. Any issues with having it inspected since it has a modern year? Anything else I should watch out for??

I've got some last steps on my West Coast/Kellison to go. I'll do the registration this summer. I took a look at this some time ago. Here is what I found out. Youve got 2 options. 1 - You can state it as a "66 Replica" and you are grandfathered for EPA. 2 - A "specialty vehicle" (Which I would not do since you have the "Replica") Specialty is basicly a non-production car like a Kit (Bradley-GT etc.). Emissions is based on the year the donor engine is made. You need to go to your local police station for them to look at your reciepts to verify your purchase of the vehicle and get your VIN number. Then take it to the DMV for title and registration.

Since Its been a while, I may not be on the latest. Let me know if I'm not quite right about this.

I have a Lone Star and it's titled as a 2000 Cobra, the year it was made. It was titled here 5 years before the new "year it represents" law came into effect. Virginia has actually become quite easy on the replica crowd. You might be able to argue that it represents a 66 and get the Virginia DMV to buy in. They're probably going to make you title it as the same year the old title had it as though. Get all your paperwork together and take it to the DMV for an initial visit. They'll give you exact instructions what to do from there.

I bought my car as a driver from a guy in South Dakota. It came with a MSO and a 2000 title. I did not have to do the state police thing on mine when I titled it here. I've never had any problems with emissions requirements for state inspections in my part of Virginia. They don't sniff tailpipes in my area either. They do in other parts of Virginia though, typically the northern and western parts of the state. Us southern boyz get a free pass

Also, If you get them to title it as a 66 you can get some original Virginia 1966 plates (FleaBay or otherwise) and register it with them. That definitely adds to the cool factor. It will require it to have "antique plates" which Va places some restrictions on what you can do with the car, mileage, where you drive it, etc...

Go to DMV with the paper work you have recevied and discuss your options befoe you pull the trigger. you want to get the antique tags be cause you will save money for as long as you own car . you pay tag price for that year only not every year as with regular tags

Thanks Folks. I appreciate the replies. I was debating going to DMV with the electronic copy of the copy I have received. Apparently I found out there is a special department at the DMV that I can call to discuss. Now if I can only get routed to the right department. My main concern was the emissions piece. I know they don't do smog testing but I am not sure I can convince them I have catalytic converters hidden inside the huge sidepipes. ;-)

Hey all...sorry for drumming up such an old thread, but it is fitting to my current situation. Getting ready to also pull the plug on acquiring a FF replica from out of state. Current owner has it titled as a 2003. I want to retitle it as the year it is replicated (I think 65 or 66). Good info in the thread so far, but looking for further details in doing so. Best options to approach in getting it done? From what I've read, it's retitled as the year it's replicated, not the eng build year, unless I missed that someplace on DMVs website. Any and all guidance would be appreciated...thanks in advance..

Take the title, bill of sale, several pictures from different angles and the DMV regulations for Replica vehichles down to the Downtown DMV in Richmond. It is the central office I think. They have a department down there called Salvage Titles. Don't let that scare you. They handle specialty titling situations. I took several trips from the back office DMV associate going up and down stairs to others to consult. I was gushingly nice during the whole thing. I was sent home and in a week a title was in the mail that stated it was a 1966 Ford Cobra. Longest week I ever went through. One thing. In VA you can not get Antique tags on a Replica titled this way. I would rather not have any restrictions anyway. But with a Title that says this is a 60's vehicle. You can breeze though any inspection.

thanks for the info...Richmond is two hours away...that would surely be a long long day. Was thinking of mailing it all, but probably won't...i don't want antique plates either, just want to drive w/o issues of not having cats...

I did everything at my local DMV without problems.

BTW... The Cavalier Garage (behind the Cavalier Hotel at the Beach) does my inspections and never has questioned anything.

Well finally got the car on Wed. Had it transported out from Mo. Sweet as when I first saw it back in Apr . Now to get thru the titling crapola....I'll post up some pics in a new thread. Look forward to continued chats

Undy...is that garage still in existence? Finally got the car titled via richmond. Longest five weeks ever. They titled it as a 1965 specialty cobra with year build of 2003. Now I just need to tow it for insp, then get it registered and finally enjoy it

Thanks. Yep, i goggled them. Sucks they were forced out, but they are alive and kickin. Will have to touch basis with them this week to set up a time to tow the car over for insp.

Its been a while, life is throwing curve balls..oh joy. Well finally got the car inspected. Great guys at the garage. Top notch and took very good care of the car. Then registered it that same day. And have since enjoyed spirited driving on good days. Ended up needing to replace the battery tho, would not hold a charge. Got a replacement, and all is good again. Its a dream to drive. Teaching GF how to now. She loves it.
