original 427 cobra air cleaners?
did the original 427 cobras ever come with a 14 inch air cleaner assbly? if so was it the same one they used on the 289 cars. i am undecided on a air cleaner for my 445 i have the cobra oval with a 3 inch k&n i dont know if it will fit, i like the turkey pan for the look, but the cheap way out would be a 14 inch round one?.

14" round is correct for 427 street cars, they look good.

They used the same air filter assy as 289 Hipo Mustang. The OEM 289 Cobra assy was the same as a Fairlane but different than a Mustang. The assy bottom may have been the same, and had provision for PCV added when it came into existance.

The 14" round air cleaners were Ford issue. The early ones have a slightly different chrome top shape, but by the time 427s were out, they used the same one as is currently available in reproduction. The originals are not too difficult to find, and seem to be made from slightly thicker steel. I believe Ford still lists a good reproduction one in the Racing Parts catalog.

At the risk of feeding his ego, I will give credit to Patrick for sending this to me in another thread. You will see it has a part number and photo of the 14" Ford air cleaner. I'm not sure if this is the reproduction talked about in the previous post, but it is worth a look. The document also has a chart showing flow rates for this filter with 4 different filter elements.

To revive this thread...what is the original decal on a 1966 Street 427 with a 14" air cleaner? The blue and white COBRA decal or the orange-black 427 High Performance decal.

The decal shown in the above pic is originally from a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT350. I believe that the correct decal for a 427 Cobra would be the orange 427 High Performance one.
I personally like the look of the blue/white one better, though.

Colin Comer told me that the blue/white one was correct. I thought the orange Hi-Po one was correct because I have never seen the blue and white one on a Cobra. When I asked Colin, he said, "the decal on CSX3127 is the correct one". For the detail of that car and being at auction (and his knowledge), I am assuming he is correct, but I wanted all of your input as well on what you have seen.
The blue and white one is always listed as a "1967" air cleaner decal.
Here it is on a '65 427:

I don't remember what the history books say but I think the chrome covers would look better on a street car. The cast ally ones look pretty race car, imo.

If you use the black wires, MSD makes a black cap. Part #84333.

Everything will be black...I bought the black wires and the black cap, but I was wondering if I do not have to use that screw-in top on the cap. Does that prevent the boots from popping off? I am sure that is just an extra safety/security/peace-of-mind addition but is not necessary.

The 289 and 427 had different air cleaner tops. This is the 289 top.
I believe that the blue and white decal is indeed for the 67 Shelby GT 350.

I don't want to question the authority of the esteemed Mr. Comer, but I beg to differ. I stand by my previous post. Oh, and the base on that supposedly-concours-restored air cleaner would not have been chrome...

I've used that same cap and wires for years, without the screw-down wires loom. I haven't noticed a single wire ever lifting off the distributor post.

I've used that same cap and wires for years, without the screw-down wires loom. I haven't noticed a single wire ever lifting off the distributor post.
