Default Brake Pad for Street and Track

Anyone have a recommendation for a brake pad that is good for the road course track but OK on the street?

Thanks.

I run SSBC calipers with slotted rotors. Call Hawk performance, great pads, work really well. I have the HPS pads. Once you start to get a little more serious you can move up to HP Plus.

I have Carbotech XP-8 (first level race compound) pads on my car; SSBC Tri Power caliper with 13" rotors front and stock TBird calipers and rotors on the rear. This combination provides excellent stopping power with great feeling and modulation.

The XP-8 pad provides very good bite when cold and after they get warm, the bite is excellent. They're not cheap.

Give them a call and they will make a recommendation to suit your needs.

Default Brake Pads

I recommend Performance Friction. Great pads, no fade, no squeeking on the street.

so ive done the internet research and it seems to come down to:
hawk hps
carbotech xp8
ebc yellowstuff

sounds like the hps is best for street and acceptable for track

xp8 more track than street? same for yellowstuff?

Hawk HPS works well on my Mustang for track and street. The pads do not chew up the rotors as much as a pure race pad would. Vehicle weighs 3,400 pounds with me and I do not get any real fade on the road courses during a thirty minute session. I run Wilwoods on my Cobra. On Edit. Are you looking to road race or auto cross?

road racing, no autocross.

i am looking for a pad that will be relatively easy on the rotors, low dust but a big improvement over stock.

I assume you have Mustang calipers on that FFR?
I run Performance Friction 1994 compound pads on my open track Mustang using the larger piston SVO/Crown Vic calipers. Long life, no fade, and rotor friendly. They're also cheap, less than $50 a set for the front.

Curt,

HP Plus? Do you drive on the street much?

DougD makes a nice case for the Performance frictions...

Ed, I do drive on the street although the car is nowhere near daily driver status. I drive to and from the track and paly with it on the weekends when I have time. Given that the Cobra is a lot lighter than the Mustang, the HPS may work well for you. I do not know about the Performance Friction pads personally but have heard others praise them like Doug. $50 is certainly priced right too. My Mustang utilizes a Stoptech 4 piston caliper and the Hawk pads are not cheap. Let us know what you decide and how you like them.

DougD,

I called performance friction and asked about that part # 1994; they didn't know it; can you double check and/or describe the pad that you have.

According them they rate their pads by type of compounds:
Carbon Metallic is 20 (or .20) compound
Z rated is 10 ( or .10) compound
entry level race is 97 (or .97) compound (the Tech recommended these for my application -says they are easy on the rotors and work better than Hawk HP+ on the track - he cautioned that they aren't very good on the street if they aren't heated up a little)

Do you know which one of these you use?

Regards,

Phil

Here's what's printed on the end of the box:

Performance Friction
1994
FMSI 7082CD199
Carbon Metallic
Non Organic

I distinctly remember ordering them by the 1994 number. It's a model number, not a friction material.

I looked at their web site, and found a part number for the Carbon Metallic pad for a 1985 Mustang SVO listed as 0199.20. The number I listed above that is on the box ends with a 199, so maybe they changed their numbers in the last couple of years since I bought a new set.

Based on your above post, I'd have to say that you would need a 0199.20.

Their web site has a lot of info on the different pad materials and compounds, but no where does it say which compound you get with which part number. Pretty poor web site if you ask me. You might have to give them another call and ask for someone who actually has been there more than a short time and can answer a question without looking at a computer screen. Theoretically you should be able to pick a pad style to fit your application and then specify the pad material you want. But I sure can't figure it out with the info they list on the site.

Hope this helps. They are a good pad, cheap, long wearing, and they stop great with no fade.

Doug

I would caution you to use a track pad on non-track drives. When I did the investigation you did a while ago, I was warned over and over again by each mfg., race track pads will require temperature and usage to grip; God forbid you have racing pads on and have to panic stop a few miles into your drive.

It seems like you are trying to use race pads for casual driving at times, where I used high-performance driving pads (not strict racing pads) for racing. Certainly one could argue that my braking has suffered when racing, but certainly is not dangerous when driving.

Just my 2 cents.
