Can somebody help me identify this fuel pump

While I was taking advantage of the beautiful weather today I got stranded at Lowes in the Cobra. I had a real hard time starting it this morning, it would run, die, run, idle for a bit, die again over and over until it finally stayed running.

It was also bogging down real hard in 1st while I was taking off from a stand still. Finally when we got out at Lowes and then got back in after shopping....it just wouldn't start. I finally got it started, drove about 8 parking spots with a severe hesitation and then it completely died. My initial thought is the fuel pump. Here's the best pictures I could get with it on the ground.......

The paperwork I have with the car states that the engine is a 1967 428. I couldn't necessarily find a pump that matched when I went to the Napa site. I tried Jegs and found a Carter M4008 that looked somewhat the same. Is that the correct one?

Any help identifying which model this comes off of would be great and much appreciated.

factory style pump......there is a filter in that canister underneath. napa should have the element. i think carter made replacements, it looks like i can almost see the word carter in the one pic of the housing

most 1967 1968 ford passenger cars with 390-428 would use that type of pump

i think my 66 t-bird has one on it like that

This type of canister fuel pump was used on a lot of 60's model Ford autos, including the Mustangs with both 6cyl and 289's....I'd check the fuel filter first before replacing the fuel pump.....These pumps can and will fail like anything else, but were very reliable and were on many cars for many years...

Thanks guys! Do you think the filter could be clogged? Can I change that out on this pump? There's only a little over 5,000 miles on the car, I can't imagine the pump is shot.

How do I remove the filter off of there, does it just unscrew?

Yep, just unscrew the canister and there is a replacable fuel filter in it,if your parts store doesn't have the filter, you can get one from any of the Mustang parts suppliers...........
even before doing that,I'd dis-connect the fuel line from the carb and have someone crank over the engine and see it any fuel is being pumped to the carb, very easy/quick check........

BTW: I ran a rebuilt original style pump like yours on my 65 fastback for 10+ years with no problems,only reason I changed to a newer style fuel pump was I put a Canton road race pan on the motor and because the canister hangs down pretty low,I could not bolt up the oil pan, had to change fuel pumps to use the road race pan, but still have that fuel pump in a box for future use should the need arise....
