Default Oil Slinger Washer on Crankshaft - 418w, Yes/No?

I know I'm losing my memory (seriously) but.....

My 418w didn't seem to have the oil slinger washer that I suppose goes on the crank nose just behind the oil seal inside the timing cover. Saw a picture of one in an assembly manual. I don't remember seeing it on disassembly and it's not on the bench. I took lots of pictures during the cam replacement tear down and it's no were to be seen in any of them.

I really don't think my motor had one in place and it had 4K miles and no leaks in the front seal, probably without it.

So, necessary or not?

Thanks,

Wayne

I'd say if it didn't leak without it,you should be good to go, but if you can find one and your motor is still apart, put one on, just in case....

The factory put that oil slinger in there. Almost everyone who rebuilds the engine throws it away. Usually after they find it on the bench when the engine is running. If you have you, it won't hurt anything to install it. Otherwise, don't sweat it.

I haven't seen one in many years.

X3....I'd leave it out. I never use them on new builds and don't have a bit of trouble.

I just pulled my FE because of a timing cover leak and a few other things. One of the things that I missed during assy was the oil slinger. I'm not sure that it was the problem or only part of it, so I replaced the crank seal as well. What I do know is that this is the first timing cover leak I've had in one of the engines that I built. "Strangly" I had no rear main leak at all which is something that I have had in the past. But this is my first FE and I find that whole system of sealing back there strange and probably put more thought into how to handle it than my small blocks of the past.
