My 78 Dodge Magnum with 2 bbl 360 had a thermal vacuum switch that made it ported unless the coolant temp was above 200 (or maybe it was 210) degrees, then it switched over to manifold vacuum to up the idle when it was hot. I thought that was cool and left it alone when I was a young lad trying to make it a bit faster.

Who cares what they do? The correct info. was posted in bingo2's reply. In a nut shell - For peak engine performance, driveability, idle cooling and efficiency in a street-driven car, you need vacuum advance, connected to full manifold vacuum. Absolutely. Positively. Don't ask Summit or Jeg's about it – they don’t understand it, they're on commission, and they want to sell "race car" parts."

Who cares what they do, they have only built 100's of engines for our cars, they know nothing right. And by the way, a vac. advance dist. for an FE is $382 from Summit vs. $255 for the same one with mechanical advance only. So much for your brilliant answer. If you use the quickest curve like most of us do, then all of the timing is in by 2,000 rpm, genius.

First off d1ckhead, my quote above was from the article bingo2 posted. Second, that article was written by John Hinckley. Never heard of him? Do a search. He was plant manager for 20+ years at GM's Corvette division, plant manager at the Chrysler Viper plant, inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame and has written many articles for auto restoration magazines. He's been responsible for building a thousand times more motors than the ones you listed ever dreamed of building.
Your attitude is typical of someone who just regurgitates what they've heard/read and has never had any hands on experience.

How many FE's did he build for 2,500 lb. cars with the long duration cams we use?

Ported or manifold vacuum is personal preference. It's just an idle issue because once the plates open it all balances out to be the same. With Ported my car idles great and I have no temperature issues at 16* initial 900 rpm 500HP 351w. As far as vacuum advance: if your on the street there are no downsides, use it.
