You can build that killer SO when you're less concerned about how it sounds and more interested in port velocity, head flow, cam events and blueprinting specs.
Which may never happen.
We got another guy here who waxes (literally) incessantly and sublimely about the noise his FE makes with exactly the same non-SideOiler combination I outline above. He spent the saved money on extra rollbars and pedicures.
His name starts with Patrick and ends with a .......

Chas is absolutely right (ehrr, not on the pedicure thing, though). The OP should just do what I did. 500HP will be plenty for him and his engine will still be pulling strong long after he's pushing up daisies....

I hear you all about the BB sound all the motors in our hot rods have been 454" or bigger since the 70's.A couple of years ago picked up a 406" roller cammed sbc powered bike this engined dynoed 580hp.Been a long time since I played with the sb stuff and with todays technology especially in the breathing dept (heads intakes exhaust and carbs) Truly incredible how much the after market has massaged the sb the flow cfm Except for lacking in physical dimension am more than impressed with the whole package.Because of the lack of physical dimension this motor will be replaced with an aluminum Donovan sbc with SB2 topend expecting near 800hp so watchout bb powered stuff.PS FE boys come listen we can compare sounds these pumps generate.

That was a trip in time, forgotten all about that 60's original hippy. An FE in a motorcycle? Now that would have to be a dedicated move.Actually did consider the spare 460 sitting under a bench but wanted an all aluminum motor and 800hp.

Sure would be fun,my car is in the 580hp range. This expected 800hp Donovan is being built for a motorcycle once dailed in you pick the day and the place.
Trust me no amount of hp is wasted on the street for some of us anyway. There are boys running around with power that would make mine look like a Yugo.

What a bunch of pussies. I say we put the gloves on both of you and give you three, 3-minute rounds, and see who's left standing.

I think we're waiting on Patrick to post the results from his acoustical comparison between the sideoiler FE and non-sideoiler FE, the SBF and finally the SubZero refrigerator. Once the information is posted, we'll be able to definitively give PHC1 an answer to his original question.

Well since Patrick peaked my interest, I paid attention at the London Ohio Cobra show. I tried to locate the FE cars and only found 6, 8 counting two vender display cars. That is out of nearly 200 cars. Now there were a lot of cars with hoods down, so there certainly had to be more. I did see some more FE cars earlier in the week, but I didn't want to double count. I also counted 4 385 series big blocks.
I can say if you have a near stock 300 HP or less SB, they are pretty easy to tell. When you get to the engines making good power it gets very difficult to hear a difference as the power goes up. However the one thing that stuck out is the BB all had the milder sounding cams.
Why the milder cams? Well I could speculate that they just don't need them to make the power, and that is likely true. Also more cid tends to sound milder with the same cam specs, all else being equal, but remember some of the SB were bigger cid than some of the FEs.
Now not all FE's sound alike. I met a fellow with an all aluminum 460 cid FE with tunnel port heads. It had a fairly mild cam (hydraulic roller) with a C6 transmission behind it. I think it had the sweetest sound there. He showed me the dyno sheet. Practically flat torque curve around 600. Torque was only down to 550 @ 6700 rpm where they stopped at 650 Hp. It looked like it wouldn't have peaked before 7500, but that is my speculation. Torque was over 500 where they started the pull at 3000 rpm. The car is fast. Oh yea it was in an ERA too. Great guy to talk to too.
