Many years ago I saw a friends SPF Cobra do this but it was because he was running the air/fuel mixture to lean which was really overheating the pipes. If you have the car setup right this shouldn't be an issue. Having the side pipe cermaic coated also keeps the heat going out the pipe vs the exterior of the pipes getting hotter.
