Fuel Cut-off Switch
I've always been a little nervous of the electric fuel pump continuing to pump fuel onto a hot engine in the event of a crash and I would like to fit some kind of electrical cut-out switch that will break the circuit to the pump in the event of an impact.
I'm sure others must have fitted something along these lines. Can anyone suggest or recommend a switch/device that would be suitable.

Hi Paul,
I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback and ideas on this. An alternative solution would be to install a battery cut-off switch. I just ordered a keyed switch and plan to install it behind the passenger seat (I have a trunk mounted battery). I like the idea of being able to reach over and remove the key as an additional theft deterent. Of course, this would not be automatic, you'd have to reach over and turn the key to cut the power. Here is what I bought...

Paul, I would say 90% of the cars on the road today have a Fuel Pump Inertia Switch. Just Google it and you'll see you can pick one up at your local parts store that will suit your mounting needs and wiring convenience. This is a much easier task than you could even imagine. Here's a pic of a typical, generic FPIS.

Are you considering an automatic or manual cut-off switch?
If you are considering the addition of a battery cut-off switch,
Consider that most of the normal installations of battery cut-off switches in our cars will not actually stop the engine from continuing to run after flipping the switch. This is because the battery might be isolated by the kill switch, but the alternator will continue to power the ignition system and electric fuel pump. Some fancy wiring can isolate the electric fuel pump (IF that is what you have installed) The easiest solution is the cut-off switch from Pegasus (part#4430) which will require you to rewire your alternator output wire to the cutoff switch to be isolated.
Note: Before anyone goes out to see if their cut-off switch will indeed shut off their car - you risk a big voltage spike thru your wiring when you cycle the switch with the car running - which is not good thing for your ignition box.
The nornal cut-off switch installation will work as a theft deterrent – preventing someone from starting the car.

Many thanks or the replies. I already have a battery isolator, but I wanted an automatic switch, just in case I was incapacitated in the crash and couldn't throw the isolator switch.
The inertia switch seems to be what I need. I already have a switch for the fuel pump on the dash, so wiring in an inertia switch located behind the dashbord should be pretty straightforward.

I had one of these installed on my Kirkham. IIRC, right under the passenger side dash. Cheap insurance. :) |

Thanks Gary, but I don't think that is what I need. I want to cut the fuel in the event of a crash, not when the engine stops.

X2 on the Inertia Switch recommended. Just make sure you mount it someplace easy to get to. Had one go out on me and was chasing my tail for a bit until I figured out it was the switch. Jumpered the plug to get me home but only took me about 15 minutes to change it out. Mine is mounted on a small secondary plate on the engine. Easy to see and get to.

Rolling the Cobra in or out of the garage, yes, I'm a professional at pushing it. Of course, being only 2,100 lbs, it's fairly easy to do.
And with all the quad, calf, hammy, plantar and glut work that I do, it makes it that much easier. :p ;) :cool: |

Uhhh, I'd like to see you concentrate more on helping others in 2013. You should take a page from Chas and sell that car of yours and donate the funds to the Society for Krishna Consciousness. You'll feel better about yourself and we'll all think the better of you for it.:cool: |

Oh-BTW, fuel cutoffs are a fine idea but I never had one in 27 years. And it won't matter anyway unless you safety wire the gas cap-like Jamo and me.

Napa part number FPS100 also comes with the proper connector.
