To bloody old
Well it's not the first time that I have been told that I am too bloody old.
I am too bloody old and just don't understand apparently..
Am I... .... I am not sure read on
I think I am pretty cool for a fifty something guy, but yesterday I started to really understand that my generation and thinking has changed.
I called over to my neighbors house for a quick Christmas drink with his wife and teenage kids.
His daughter is just the prettiest young girl who has both a nice personality and is extremely polite.
Her 18 year old girlfriend turned up to go cruising. Well I had heard about this girl who drives a cool 60's car and is part of the Rockabilly group. I was surprised to see this extremely attractive girl arrive. She was the type of young girl that would attract friends.
... But this beautiful young girl had covered her entire left arm and part of her neck in the most colorful tattoo that I had seen. It was real artwork. Then I noticed that she had a tattoo on her back that appeared to cover her entire back and down her thigh.
Hell I thought what had this girl done to herself..
I felt a feeling of - well you know I am not quite sure what the feeling was. It was a feeling when you see someone with a severe burn on their face or body. You have a feeling of .. "poor kid they have this burn..."
I am not against tattoos but.... I know I have no right at all to be judgmental but I just don't understand doing this.
But........ Maybe I am getting old but if it was one of my kids or grand kids I think I would..
Mmmmmmm..... ...... just my generation

You're not alone, my friend. Tats do nothing for me either. I keep wishing for this horrible fashion trend to go away before my two lovely daughters get any stupid ideas.

In some instances (like this one) I feel it's the same as defacing a work of art ! and I feel a sense of loss.

Body Art
Don't think that your too old. People have been putting tattos and lip rings on themselves forever. So, you have to ask yourself when you put this on your body, "Will I like it when I'm 80?".. Or "will it matter?" It seems like it matters to you.
Hopefully I'm not too biased on this. I think of myself as having an open mind. However, Tattos all over yourself is not wise. That seems obvious to some of us, and not to others. Well the problem is a matter of wisdom, not age. If you happen to have wisdom at your age, what ever age, then that's just an advantage you have. Others, may not share the advantage.

Yes I often wonder how they will be perceived and how the may or may not regret it in later life.
Hair colors, fashion etc. changes but once marked it is I guess for life.
they will sit rounding nursing homes reading each others tattoos....

Bernie,
You're one of the coolest 50+ year olds I know.
I like to think you're not too old, just ahead of your time
Imagine how cool you'll be when being un-tattooed comes back in fashion.
For mine, each to their own... But here's my thoughts on the matter.
You don't put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari, quality cobra like a CSX, or Kirkham, etc. so why would I put a tattoo on my skin?

As a 60+ guy, I picked up a little insight into the tattoo fad while watching a TV crime scene investigation drama. Investigators were trying to discern the identity of a murder victim who had tattoos. The conversations went like this:
Head Investigator: "How old was the victim?"
Coroner: "25 to 30 years old. Why?"
Head Investigator: "Tattoos on a person over 50 usually indicate either military service or or a non-conformist who lived outside the mainstream. Tattoos on a person under 40 usually indicate a conformist who was just following fashion trends."
I too find tattoos on an otherwise attractive young woman to detract from her appearance. But I've come to accept that it doesn't mark her as a non-conforming wild-child. To the contrary, it marks her as a mainstream fad follower.

Tommy
My Dad did time in the services during WWII and had a couple on his arm. He was later keen to get them removed which he did - when I think about it I am not sure how he had them taken off. He still has marks on his arms.
Having three daughters of my own I am glad they missed the fad or chose to ignore it.
I think it is a bit like the Gothic thing. - some people follow the trend and dress in black etc etc.. Then others go down other fad paths.
But tattoos are not like a fashion trend there may/will come a time when they are sick of being Gothic or whatever and just go back main stream.
... But what happens when this girl gets rid of her 60's car and wants to follow another trend?
I was talking with my neighbour - and he is younger than me - about the heavily tattooed girl and he said he would never employ her as he sees her as rebellious and stuck in a trend or time warp. He told me he has spoken at length to his daughter about it and she is not keen to get one.
he told me his surgeon friend had threatened to tattoo "Daddy's Little Girl" in a prominent place on her body if he operated on her....
Mmmm don't know if that's right with his thinking about employing this girl, but it is his comments and he is in the medical field with a large practice with a number of Doctors, Nurses and administration staff.
I thought he would see lots of females with tattoos. But apparently most have small roses, swallows etc etc..
Me, well I am thinking of having Shelby tattooed on me with a Cobra.. if only it was temporary - I may end up driving something else...

I don't have any tats myself, but as a younger bloke several of my mates have prominent tattoos.
One chick I know has a huge phoenix on her back, and I mean huge. It looks very good, and it has a lot of meaning to her. Because it's on her back, she can hide it easily when working ect.
Another bloke has some all over his arms, military themed, also with the names of his kids on his forearms. Again, it means a lot to him and he can cover them with long sleeves if he needs to look professional.
I understand tattoos like these, and reckon that they look really good. They also have personal meaning, and with that in mind it seems less likely that they will end up regreting them.
What I don't get is tats that are just pointless, currently fasionable trends, such as tribal tattoos, kanji characters that you cant even read, random butterflies and flowers. I reckon those are the kind of things that people will regret when they go out of fashion - just like the chinese dragon style ones that were popular a couple of decades ago...
All that said, I had a good chat about it once with the chick with the phoenix tatt, and her response was something very much along the lines of the following pic.
Maybe she's onto something lol

Yes, I must agree with meaniful things but a big dragon crushing a bear on her arm and neck does not make sense.
.. Then I am trying to understand the Garden of Eden on her back with the snake running down her hip onto her leg.
Must check them out again in more detail - Mmmmm
Perhaps a Phd - Doctorate Thesis will be written on this in a psychology course..

I get the Phoenix tattoo. As a kidney failure survivor and with a cancer survivor son I've considered dual Phoenix on my upper right shoulder blade commemorating our survival, but also honoring the life lost that saved mine.
Holding me back is that I would be extremely picky on the art work (hmmm, where's Kat Von Dutch???), and then the loss of my unique status of NOT having a tattoo AND living in Santa Cruz county...
Rockabilly or not: the sexiest tattoos are subtle, I think.
Too old, or too sensible?

Okay, yes - - i do have a rather parochial perspective.
I think a tat on a good looking girl is a great conversation starter. It also gives you a fairly accurate insight into her personality.
What is the tatoo?
Where is it located?
How large/small is it?
These are personality qualifiers. I can't comment on the artistic value of any particular tat - - or of tats in general - - frankly i don't care. They are great conversation staters and if handled properly can get me a long way toward getting laid.
I'm going to be 78 years old (young) the day after tomorrow and i've learned, over the decades, that approach, tone and topic are completely different when you're trying to get a 25 year old into bed than with a 45 year old. (i don't mess with anything over 45 years old).
I don't have any tats. I have a hell of a lot of scar tissue that i might someday trade for some nice tats. None of my three sons have them and i don't have any daughters. A bunch of grand kids and no tats (that i know of).
When i meet a good looking 25 year old with a lot of tatoos i think - - they're invisible when the lights are out.
Y'all have a really great day.
