I suggest trying the NT-05 as a compromise to the NT01. 01s have a relatively low tread wear number (100). NT05s are 200. Not sure on 555, but probably in the 400 range. The lower the number the stickier and shorter lived. I doubt the 200 tread wear type tires will thow lots of rocks. Good decision on avoiding the 01s for the street, as they will pick up anything on the road and throw into your fenders.

I switched from Pilot Sports to the Nitto NT01's and the difference was extreme. All good points here as usual on pro's and con's-these tires are like chewing gum and throw pebbles around but man are they sticky. I have the 3M clear protective film (forget the name of it) on the rear which is incredibly tuff. So far I do not have any damage to the paint.

Not sure on the HP on my car but running a 427 with Webers so ther is alot of Torque. The rear gear is 3:27
I thought the NT 05 were more of full race tire and think someone commented that it hydro planes in the water. I dont drive my car in the rain but would hate to get caught somewhere and be in trouble. I guess if it is not that bad then I can use the NT05

Are you speaking that I should consider the NT 05 or the NT 05R.
The comment for the hydroplane was for the NT05R I believe which is a drag radial. NT 05 looks to be a somewhat regular tire.

I believe the NT01 is the same compound as the Toyo 888. I used the 888's for half a season. What a terrible tire! Didn't last long, heat cycled out very quickly. You could tell when they got hot, as suddenly the track was covered with oil. Based on that, I wouldn't want to use them as a street tire. 2-3 hours on the highway in July, and you've overheated them.
OTOH, now I'm using the 555's on the street. I like this tire. Excellent dry traction even when cold. Nice firm sidewall. I put them on last year, and so far the wear is excellent. I'd buy these again in a minute.
The 555R is meant for the drag strip. It's not a wrinkle tire, but the sidewall is much more pliable than the 555. It might give you a little smoother ride at the expense of some cornering ability. That shouldn't matter even in hard street driving. But it might matter in an emergency maneuver. Maybe just splitting hairs here, though.

I've been caught in the rain several times in the NT05R's and they were fine as long as I drove carefully. The 555R's were better in the rain than the NT05R's. The Mickey Thompson Drag radials were scary in the rain.

Interesting set of answers; just what you would expect on ClubCobra
I took off the Michelins last year and put on Nitto NT05s ( note: no R - that is a track tire, not a street tire and as such has much worse wear and wet characteristics). The NT05s have been fine in the dry and good in the wet. The Michelins were treacherous wet or dry. These are waaay better. Almost as good on the track as my Victoracers.
They are starting to show wear after about 1,000 miles plus one track day. They are reportedly better than the Kumhos in the wet. When these go, I will get the same thing again.

The NT01s start to come to life around 140F and are best around 180-200F. They are not Toyo 888 compound. Excellent feedback and cornering stability. It takes a lot to break traction and are very controllable when they do. One of the best DE tires available in my opinion. Best tire you can get and still be DOT legal. Expect around 10K+ street mileage.

Stickiest I have tried for the street but don't expect 12K miles out of them.
Treadwear rating of 50.
I also use them as a "wet" track tire.
