Default Concept Mustang from early 1960's...

So did Shelby or any of his team have a hand in this concept car?

No, that's the first concept called the Mustang II.

Here's the comment below the picture:
Before the name Mustang was applied to Ford's new pony car model, it went onto this 1963 mid-engine concept car. Ford engineers who developed the famed GT40 Le Mans race car also created this concept car and hoped that it would carry the Mustang moniker into production.

The reason I asked was this blurb underneath the picture:

So there is no way that a newspaper reference could jumble-up Shelby into "Ford engineers" then?

Cool, just curious.

Ford's engineers developed the GT40.

Shelby's engineers made it work so they could win.

Roy Lunn headed up the Mustang I and II projects, which were done at Ford's Engineering Research Center, the same operation that did the turbine truck. Roy later managed the contractor KarKraft where such projects as the J-car, Mk IV GT40s, TransAm Mustangs and Boss 429 Mustangs were done. I was assigned to KarKraft in the late '60's to work on the mid-engine Mustang. It was an interesting time to say the least.

The production Mustang was pretty well locked up as to design when the "Mustang II" was shown. It was intended to "tease" the Mustang prior to introduction. This is commonly done in the industry, in fact Ford has just shown a concept truck, "Atlas" that is based on the 2014 F150. The last two Mustang generations have also had production based "concepts" shown before intro of the real car.

I love and miss those far out old concept cars. Things have gotten too practical these days!

Sorry, the picture at the top of this thread is the "Mustang I" concept.

There is a wiki page for the "Mustang I" concept: Ford Mustang I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've posted some photos, but I'd have to sort throug the photos as there scattered throughout. Better than photos is the '66 Mustang HiPo test mule I bought. It was for the cammer 289. Ford reinstalled the HP289 when testing was done, a brand new one at that!
