Default 351W will not start.

My friends SPF was running fine. When he turned it off it dieseled. Now it will not start. Checked the coil, ignition box, fuel pump. All seemed ok. Magnetic Pickup (msd)? Timing was thrown off? Any thoughts?

First and foremost, don't go cranking on the distributor trying to adjust the timing. That seems to be the standard starting point for some people. Remember this phrase "KISS" keep it simple s****d.

Not saying anyone is S****d. It's the "simple" part that you want to remember.

First, make sure that there is fuel and no wires came un-connected.

Second, remove the distributor cap, crank the engine and make sure that the rotor is turning.

Third, pull the #1 plug and get the engine up to "TDC" on the compression stroke and make sure that the rotor is pointing to where the plug wire for #1 spark plug wire is.

Fourth, if all above is ok then check for spark coming from the coil to the center of the distributor cap. If that is ok then check for spark coming from the distributor cap to the plugs.

Let us know how that works out and then we can go further.

I am sure that more will chime in and probably tell you that I am full of s**t and to take another route.

The first thing to do is to determine if you are getting a spark. There are very simple test procedures well documented on the MSD website to test the ignition box, magnetic pickup and coil. All you need is a Volt/OHM meter to check the coil and Mag pickup. Very simple things to do. I agree with the idea of checking the rotation of the rotor too. Feel free to have your friend contact me if he has questions.
BTW: The output of the coil wire or a sparkplug wire will blow yo across the garage if you get zapped. Can be quite dangerous. So be careful.

"...Out of gas" I forgot that one....
That goes along with forgetting to turn the electric fuel pump back on....

Rotor turns. No spark from coil when starter turns engine, spark when key is turned off. Going to replace magnetic pickup next. Additional thoughts?

Car has silver box from SPF, not MSD. Has MSD distributor. Coil from SPF. Replaced silver SPF box with new SPF (taken off my SPF when my car was new).

Problem solved. Magnetic pickup was bad (only had about 1,000 miles on it).
Thanks for the help!
