Auctions America: CSX 2023
1963 Shelby Cobra CSX 2023
" The Cobra on offer is the 23rd production example that was built. It was billed to Shelby American on October 1, 1962 and sold to Downtown Ford in Los Angeles on November 28, 1962. Its early ownership data is unknown, but from 1971 until 2011, it was under the stewardship of one owner, Ruben Garnica. The Cobra was restored in the early 1980s. At some point early in its life, the motor in CSX2023 was upgraded to a 289-cid V-8. The engine is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. "

Can you identify the wheels on 2023? They don't look top be the Torq Thrust wheels that owners fit to the standard spline-dive hubs. Has the car been converted to bolt-ons?

From the Auction's info
" CSX2023 is equipped with rare center-spindle American Racing Magnesium knock-off wheels "

You are right, early cars used spline drive (kinda like 5pin set up) and that is what you see. They only work on sline drive spinldes, there was a set on ebay a few weeks ago, north of $4000

American Racing spline drive magnesium wheels have been covered in other threads but in short two styles of wheels were sold new as a regular production option for Cobras; plus a Ken Miles special version for CSX2431.
Style 1 (my description) Hidden Lugs Spline Drive
The splined steel adapters bolt into the back of the wheel's hubs. This is the design that appears to be purely Cobra unique in the 15X6.0 size. There were other sizes up to 8.5 wide that are not uncommon still. Most owners like these wheels better from an appearance stand point.
Style 2 Exposed Lug Nuts Spline Drive
These wheels are believed to be the answer a problem with the bolts in the original design working loose in competition. This revised bolting method bolts through the wheel's hub like a conventional bolt on wheel. Shelby American used this design wheel on the second Dragonsnake. This design was available for Cobras in widths from 6.0 up. (This design is in the 1966 American Racing wheel catalog. AR made this and other spline drive designs for several different popular sports cars.)
Style 3 Hidden Lug Nuts SIX PIN DRIVE
Look like the first version but customs for Ken Miles to use on CSX2431. Rumor says two sets were made and one set still exists.

Your welcome.
A popular combination these days (for original Cobras with stock wheel arches) is 15X6.0 wheels front and 15X7.0 wheels rear. Most tires on 15X7.0 wheels will probably rub wheel arches (blisters paint really quick). Custom made rear adapters can be / have been made to inset the rear wheels in as far as they will stand to get more coachwork clearance in the rear.

There is a more recent thread about 2023 which documents the changes it has been through since its sale in 3/13, adding clarity to the increase in its hammer price this year.
