Ehhh, I'm not even thinking about the HP. Right now, if I'm under 50mph and give it more than 3/4 throttle, I just get wheel-spin anyway. A few more HP really means nothing. Yeah, I know, upgrade to the Avons..... I just kind of liked the look of that K&N filter top. You know, like my Halibrand mags....

Uhhh, if by that you're referring to my simply pointing out that small blocks in a 427 car basically suck, well then yeah, I guess you're right.

Truth in advertising patrickt, 427 fender emblem on a 427 car = 427 under the hood, your car lies, mine tells the truth

That's the complete turn-key package, including the custom low-profile base, 9" K&N filter, 9" K&N Extreme top and Quik-Latch assembly. Add it all up, including the metal spinning, machining and fab of the custom base and the modification to the Extreme top (we fly-cut the recess to fit the Quick-Latch nice and flush). It's not a bad deal.
Search the message thread. There is one pic here in this thread of a happy customer's installation:

I think I'll pick up that nice K&N lid, which only comes in black, and then touch it up to it looks like unpolished aluminum. I don't need the Quick-Latch or anything else though. Want me to post pics when I do it?

Yes. Just be aware that the Extreme top smallest size is 9", which started me on my journey. That 8" Stellings was choking my motor IMHO.
9" will still fit in your turkey pan, but then you need a 9" base, and all the commercially available ones will raise your filter height by 1" or so, which in turn reduces the filter height you can use (trust me, I have a whole garage of them while searching far and wide). Hence the low-profile base I came up with, thus allowing the 9"x2" filter and the top and lots of air while still letting you get to your float adjusters. Not sure what kind of hood clearance you have. Some folks that have used it have gotten away with 2.25" and 2.75". Not trying to be a sales guy here. Just sharing what I have learned. The K&N Extreme top you need is #66-0901.
Good luck Patrick!

I use that K&N black top. I like it! Better air intake for sure.

OK, I bought it and it's on its way. Here is a shot showing the clearance under my hood as taken through the scoop. There is a wooden ruler sitting on the chrome filter top, and on top of that is a roll of black electrical tape. Blue painters tape is on the hood so you can see it better. The combination of the ruler and tape is exactly 7/8 of an inch and everything just barely touches the hood and the hood latches with them there. So my current top free space, when nothing is torquing over, is 7/8 inch. I currently have the K&N E-2570 filter, which is 1.875 inches high. I have the K&N master list and I see that I can go higher, or lower, depending on where that new top sits. I don't think I'm fond of the black look, but I won't know until I see it. I think I will try and make it appear to be unpolished aluminum. After doing my wheels, a filter top should be a piece of cake. One interesting point. I flipped my current lid over, and it seemed, maybe, to gain about a quarter inch in clearance over putting it right side up. There's a pic below. I actually like the look of unfinished aluminum more than the chrome side. Of course, I don't want the new lid to be jammed right up against the hood, but it will increase air flow over what I have now regardless.

Hi Patrick,
I bought an "adjustable height" air cleaner assembly from ERA and Doug indicated I should leave 3/8" clearance for engine torque. So, given that it sounds like you have about half an inch to play with... and actually, mine is a 14" diameter, so you may have even a bit more room due to the smaller diameter.
Regards,
Kevin

Before and after pics of 8" Stellings and 9" K&N with the low-profile base. Big difference!

Nice. But... my 4160 has a metering plate, instead of a block, on the secondary side. The low profile base will not fit back there -- the float screw gets in the way.

Why fool around. Time for a 4100 Dominator.
I'm thinking about ordering one of Bernica/Mickmate's setups just for kicks. If all else fails, and I piss away $300, then I have thread to moan and groan about it and up my post count like Patrick.
The one negative is that it won't look original like the rest of my car.

Drill a same-sized hole in the base.

Send a pic of your carb setup without the air cleaner on it. Maybe can still help.

I think that new lid is just going to bolt on down to what I've got. But if not, then I'll get out the Sawz-All.
