Well it won't; but I have an idea. In the meantime, I made it look more aluminum and less black. I'll need a new 9" filter, with a 7" ID, and then I'll have to modify the existing base. It should fit... I think.

And all this will do exactly what? Is this a cosmetic 'improvement'?

Entertain the Cobra community. Oh, and the reason a hole in the low profile base would not work with a 4160 is because the new filter will be there as well. I'd have to also drill the same hole in the new filter for it to then sit flat. With my existing base, it all will sit right on top of the float screws -- I'll just have to remove the "lip" on the existing base.

EDIT -- It might also add a couple HP or so.

Too bad Joe didn't do that when he built it.

Here's a thought; in the fall, when you put a bag over its head, pull that lump out.
Send it to our pal Brent. Tell him to put a hydro roller in it (I know your SFT litany), CNC those Ede's with a decent profile, cut them to get a nice 10:1 and build a torque / cruiser mini-monster. Lose the 4160 for an 850.
And don't tell me you already have more than yada yada-you have no idea of the fun you're missing while on the way to the pedicurist.

Oh no. Please not the SFT diatribe.

And please not the "anymore HP will only make my tires spin" speech.

At this point, Patrick is obviously bored. He painted his wheels a different shade of beige/grey/taupe/mauve/brown and now he's making a new air cleaner lid with a new filter.

Here we go. Another ten pages of nothingness.

Well, I think I like the Xtreme Top Air Filter Top, but I'm not sure. I know I didn't like black, though. What do you think?

Address my suggestion please-it was a serious thought.

No, I don't want any changes to my engine. It's taken a few years, but it really is a wonderful, wonderful engine. What I would be more inclined to do is just have Brent build me a new FE, and it could be a bored and stroked 390 or 428, and let him build it his way. But I would want it complete from the pressure plate, clutch disk, flywheel, engine, starter, alternator, carb, up through the surge tank. Then I'd just swap it in one afternoon and keep my current engine over in the corner. The real truth is that I don't want any meaningful changes to my current engine (new air cleaners don't count).

OK that's valid. But I don't understand having a (presumed) more powerful engine built which is just a stronger version of your present combination. It's not like your block is valuable; why not use it as the basis for more torque? Lowering your costs in the process?
Other than some sentimentality you have for it...

Well, I don't really pay attention to the costs all that much. Mostly, I would be doing it out of boredom. But I will not put anything but an FE in that car.

My point is to stop the boredom by getting a COBRA to drive. You don't hafta 'Boy-Race' it.
So great, send Brent the lump and a deposit and tell him to call you when it's done. He knows you're not a 7000RPM, snap-shift guy.

$20k would build an all-aluminum FE, Pond block, 482-501 cubes, Edelbrock heads, hydraulic roller, Quick Fuel carb, with all the bellhousing/flywheel/clutch/fixins that you were talking about.

Judging by your - shall we say sedate driving style:
Skip aluminum and just improve what you've got- you don't run the ricers and bikes at 3AM on Connecting Highway. Just use your existing core; 447 with a clean-up bore to 454, 10:1 pistons and CNC your heads is a fine start for a 540 HP and 590 lb/ft street motor, done at say 6100. A nice 1.3 torque-to-impress-the-adoring throngs.
Brent will pick out a nice juice roller to give plenty of lope and rump to intimidate the dry-cleaner and give you goose bumps. The Avons (which you're getting because you're coming in substantially under $20K) will handle all that torque better than those banana skins you're riding on.
A Performer RPM and 850 with 18 at idle and 38 total.
Your teen will want to ride shot-gun past his school without being embarrassed anymore.
Even your genteel Missus will get the gleam back in her eye...

Dream of the possibilities.................

Great-if they'll fit your bores after clean-up with just rings, use 'em. I'll never discourage more compression.
Follow Brent's lead-and leave him alone...

... and assuming those numbers are dyno results with no sidepipes attached and no water pump being driven, then I'm already within 5% of those values.
