It would be a good idea to attend a drivers school or two before you purchase a car. It will help you to determine what kind of car would be best for you.

The Spring Mountain School in Nevada uses new Corvettes and is a great learning experience with lots of track time. Russel at Sears Point (Infineon) is good to see if you would rather drive a real race car vs a production car.
Or you could sample the radicals at Spring Mountain.

You will be surprised how fast a stock Z06 is on a race course and how well it handles, they will eat old race prepared production cars. I am not recommending a new Corvette, but you will be amazed at how good they are and how bad old production racers are. It is just a good idea to sample different cars before you take the plunge. After driving a fast formula car or sports racer you will be spoiled for life when you see what truly great handling is like. After I drove my first Formula Atlantic I was ready to trade my Cobra for a new March, luckily the dealer turned me down and I kept my car.

Evan...if you can drive that tiny little bug of a GT....you can drive this....just gotta manhandle the girl a bit. Lotsa fun to drive...if I had the $$$$, I'd buy it...you can't build anything close to it for the price. Basically its a Cup car with a Mustang body...real quality build.

David - l've been eyeing your coupe and I don't think 30k would come even close.I have two Winston cup cars that I track,they are safe and fast but I need a crew.l also have been thinking about a 350 clone till I saw your add. Your coupe looks to be put together well and would be a one man show to get on the track. Hmmmmmmmm!

Thanks for the compliment,I raced a 6 race series down here in Vintage V-8 class and more often than not, I am a one man show,occasionally my daughter comes along and helps out....The biggest thing on race day is making sure I fill the fuel cell before the feature race and double check tire air pressures.....the car has been as reliable as the truck I tow it with and easy on parts.....I have not had a DNF in any race I started in 7 seasons!!!!!

I also have a 65 fastback,it's a street car,thought about turning it into a race car, but decided against it...In most Vintage race venues that use the older rules of "back in the day", the coupes were given a few "breaks" to compete with the GT 350's....rear disc brakes was one thing they allowed and the coupes are a little lighter and body wise, actually stronger than a fastback,so I decided on a couple rather than a fastback....Intial cost of the car was also a big consideration as the coupes are more plentiful and a lot less expensive to buy up front, leaving me more money to spend on the build...

Totally agree re Spring Mtn...did a 3-day refresher there a couple of years ago when I had the C6. But Skip Barber or other schools are just as good for getting started and essential.

Evan...might I suggest a sorted out coupe or fastback Mustang used in SCCA, but maybe not at the level of that lovely piece JohnnyMac's showing (love that car). You're likely going to have some bodywork issues as you learn, so why take it out on a beautiful thing like that?

Sorry I misunderstood.

Yes, cars are arriving. I delivered a GT40 last month that arrived with other chassis. The Superformance MK III models, GT40s and the 289 series cars are building and shipping.

There are plenty of Cup cars out there built for road racing that are dirt-cheap. They can often be had for pennies on the dollar, and will tear up the local road racing circuits with any combination of engines. They are also among the safest race cars in the world. I think they are also eligible for GT1 if you get ambitious. Life is short...have fun and good luck.

They are really inexpensive to buy and are a top notch car,almost bought one some years ago,race with and against them down here.....
The down side is getting parts......these cars are older cars not used anymore,the brakes/shocks and other suspension parts are all but obsolete,that's why the teams sell these cars.....finding replacement calipers/brake pads and other assorted parts is a major PITA and usually very costly....

As I have said before, you have the perfect car to go and do some HPDE days with, that GT. Great car to go out and learn in, plenty of guys have done it....run at 4 or 5/10s and you'll be fine...your 911 is a great choice too....
Ron,

I agree with what you said and I think (realistically) for Evan, there are plenty of first gen modded Mustangs out there. Also, don't overlook any Fox body Stangs...I learned with an 88 LX that had a 500HP 351W. There are some great 1995 and later fully modded Stangs that will suck yer eyeballs out. Mustang Don can usually find some nice cars for tracking.

Maybe he should try LeMons first.

We've got three Gashole teams...all using late 80s Mustangs done up in the best P51 paint schemes that can be applied by rattle cans. The extremely ***** version 4-cylinder team from the East, a slightly more manly V6 one in Texass, and the macho-versioned high performance supercar version on the West Coast that gets a fresh V8 every race (sometimes during the race).

Assolutely fun, stupid racing, and a great way to learn and spend money in slightly lesser amounts than fancier venues. And Evan...the stuff that dreams are made of...the judges take bribes.
