ERA vent hoses
I have burned holes in my ERA vent hoses and need to replace them. If anyone can tell me the diameter and length it will help for me to get new ones. Reference to a source would also help me, as well as advice as to how to prevent burning these new ones. Bill

Why not just call ERA and order a new set? Probably save a lot of driving around or calling around looking. I'm curious - how did you burn holes in them?

I made and installed heatshields in my ERA that enclose the header tubes in front of the footboxes and opened a hole in the fenderwell. This allows the heated air from the header tubes to funnel out the side vents in the fenders. I think I still have the patterns and if you are interested, let me know and we can figure out how to get the patterns to you.

If you want heat shields but aren't into fabricating them yourself, ERA sells them. They're not as elaborate as the ones pictured above (nice job on those, sexzsn8k) but would do the trick. Might be a bear to install with the engine already in place though.

Dan, the right side vent hose goes perilously close to the headers, which can fry the hose. The left side is routed a bit differently, so it seems to be OK.

OK - they may be routed a little differently on the more recent cars. My right one is actually seprated from header heat by the battery tray and battery and crammed up against the underside of the fender by the battery.

You gotta have some darn hot primaries to melt the hoses on the later cars. Here's a pic from when I had it apart last year.

With the vents in you fender wells, do you find the cockpit cooling vents useful?
My car does not have the fender well vents and my cockpit cooling vents are somewhat like using a hair dryer to cool off. The air thru them is pretty warm. I found it is better to not use them.
Do you get dirt or road spray thru the vents into the engine compartment?
If the fender well vents help, I might put them in.

Yes, the cockpit cooling vents are a little useful; better than not having any venting at all down there, that's for sure and the air temp coming through seems like it's ambient temp. And no, I have not noticed any dirt or goo going through the fender well vents. I think that particular upgrade was only a couple of hundred bucks, and I view it as money well spent. It looks kind of cool, too.

The difference might be that my battery is located in the trunk, so it is not there to squeeze the vent hose away from the header heat. Maybe, but I have sure melted what is there.

On the current cars ERA bonds a piece of fiberglass angle to the underside of the fender above where the battery normally mounts and uses a ziptie to fasten the vent hose to it, up high and out of the way. You might see if you have one of those under there you can secure the hose to. If not, it would be an easy addition using a little 3M HSF adhesive.

It's been a long time since #290, but for quite a while we've been putting a bracket on the underside of the fender that can be used to keep the hose from drooping.

Bill, there is nothing special about that bracket. It looks just like the clasp that you would attach a padlock to on the shed in your backyard. The hose is nothing special either -- Home Depot type stuff, it appears to me. Here's a pic:

The hose is 3" ID by about 5 ft long. We buy in bulk, but you can get small lengths from McMaster Carr.
McMaster-Carr
We install this (fiberglass angle) bracket when the body is upside down and we're putting the Coremat in. As a one-off, I'd epoxy in a small block of wood with a screw-eye. Just locate it where you want the hose highest. We just use a long wire-tie to hold everything together.
