Emurph -- for a new ERA, CSX, or KMS you will have to more than double your allotted cash outlay (and that's assuming you have ERA do all the work and you don't do it yourself). I agree with henrik, go with a BDR.

Emurph: where are you located ?
From everything you have posted here, I'd say get a used Backdraft, they are available in your price range. Henrik has pointed out some of the +'s, here's a few more:
1 It's a factory built car, painted, upholstered, wired ! Everything but engine, tranny, and whatever accessories the owner wants to add.
2 Most have opted for the 17" wheels, which aside from better handling, gives you more tire choices.
3 Suspension is the well proven BMW 3 series, along with the 3series diff. which will handle most power applications.
I've completed and driven about 2 dozen of these with everything from a 302 to an original all iron 427, and everything in between.
For cruising I like the small block ford racing 347. Plenty of power, less noise and effort.
For best sports car overall feeling, the ford racing boss 347, 450 hp is hard to beat !

I'm also 6'2"

I changed from Holly 850 carb to dynatec EFI with Accell - but I looks like 4 webers EFI is just more modern and efficient.

real 427 ... my Roush is a w351 stroked and bored to 427 - a real 427 is a big block... then you want Keith Craft FE... truck engine for lbs 2200

try out different cars... big block FE is power from 0 rpm, nice sound and the "right" engine... but expensive in all ways... ( would be my choice )

W351 /427 will give you right to put 427 on the fender The new 302 is... modern

Yes, but I'm not sure why some people don't or can't understand that a BMW is a performance car, made in both 2-door and 4-door and puts forth a ton of power. And is an excellent track car.

What do you guys think about this motor?

I am going to look at a Hurricane Motorsports cobra on Monday since the factory is 90min from my home. They seem to have good reviews. Anybody have thoughts on these cars?

Backdraft has BMW M E36 brakes, suspension +++ and is like driving a very short BMW M3 with way too much power... almost a gocart with perfect weight ratio.

For me the BMW set up was a significant factor... muct better handling ( call Jay at Vintage)

unless you put slicks on the monster the differential will hold ( it will spinn if you flip you toe ) just make sure to buy proper tires... dont save a few $...

And now you should concentrate on reading some of the old threads... think about options, colour etc. enjoy

Before I dropped $15k on a crate motor that still needs additional parts, I would let blykins build me a custom motor. I'd get what I wanted and save money in the process.

Tru Dat.

Hurricane, I forgot about them. The went out of business for a while and then they were brought back to life by new owners. I haven't heard anything negative about them. I'd check them out too.

BDR or a used SPF seem just about right in the sweet spot for your money.

Yes, they came out with a "new Hurricane" that looked lovely, but I lost track of it all (I was kind of following them) and I don't remember what happened. That was about three or four years ago, I think.

I've offered to others as well...if you are serious and are ever in the Philadelphia area (I'm 1.5 hours from Harrisburg), PM me or post up and I'll send you my number.

While I don't have a "real" 427, it's just a dart block 351w stroker 427, and it is not EFI, it is carb, you can still get a good idea if the Backdraft is a platform that you should really be interested in (and in comparison to others, especially given your price range, I see no reason why you would or could lose any interest....and if you do, I honestly don't think a Cobra replica or kit is something that you should bother doing any farther research).

I have considered going to EFI as well, but with the car tuned as is, the only thing I would really gain is a little MPG's. All driving manners are great with my car, it starts up right away, and it performs great.

Agree with PT and Rodknock. As it is, buying one of these is merely the "entry fee". Where you go from there is something to be thought out carefully for several reasons including peace of mind, resale and most importantly, what you want after you have done the exhaustive homework. Personally, I would never go with a crate motor. Part of the journey is living with whoever is building your "perfect motor" and understanding what you have and that it is what you wanted. You also have that connection with the builder vs. standing in the return line at WalMart or Target when something goes wrong.

While I personally like those colors, Monterey Red and Lambo Orange, if you're thinking of resale value, you may want to stick with the "basic" blue w/white stripes, black, or variations of silver.

And definitely stay away from beige. A beige Cobra? Who would have thunk.

It's kind of funny, but I always get the "thank god it's not blue with white stripes" comment (not that I have beige or lambo orange).
