In "rushed" situations, just say that it's a replica of a 1965 (or whatever year) Cobra and be done with it--it's the truth. "Civilians" don't care about the other details like we would, including the year it was completed.

How about, what do you say to "does that have THE 427 in it"?
I respond with "427 but it's a small block". It really is a 427, jusT not the 427 they envision so I think that one is worth explaining and differentiating..

Omg!!! More confusion for the poor civilian. You know damn well what he is asking! Where are the moderators when you need them?
Why can't you just tell the truth and say "no, it's a small block stroked to a 427." : don't be like all those insecure Continuation series owners. Just say "no" and be done with it. Geez.

Would it be rude, if a woman was asking that question, to ask her if her breasts are real? You could say that you feel insulted to even answer that question.

As serious as it is for us, I feel the most for the children whom are strapped in to their baby seats at the traffic lights when they hear the conversations between their parents and the driver of some loud and stinky car.
In 10, 20, maybe 30 years, when they are all grown up and start realizing what a Cobra is, or isn't, they will now have been led to believe that the CSX 2000 and 3000 have gone the way of the dodo; the BBF is the overweight, unnecessary, underperforming turd that it is; and that the side oiler is all but a mythical legend.
The poor children.

When someone ask I always tell them it is a 1966 Ford Cobra. Then they ask if it is original which I reply:
I have 1966 427 FE Center Oiler and a 1966 Top Loader Transmission which were original to the Cobras but the chassis and body are replicas'. this usually confusses them to not ask any more questions except the obvious one: How fast will it go? Which I respond with it usually tops out around 150 mph. All of which is true.

Friends of our son, at 14 years old, were overheard talking amongst themselves, real, fake, real, fake, real, real, fake (for well over 30 minutes) while on the boardwalk at the NJ shore. My wife asked what they were discussing, I just smiled and told her to think about that for a moment. The expression on her face was priceless when she finally got it

1965 AC Cobra kit built by a racer.
Every once in a while will get those that are confrontational then it's,I own it I built it,and drive it when ever the mood strikes.Oh and it will go around most others any time I choose.Depends on the mood at the moment.

I answer: "The title says it is a 1966 Cobra replica"

Rarely do I quote myself (would seem narcissistic), yet a thought..Remove the above mention of the kids on the boardwalk, and insert CSX "Continuation series owners" talking with CSX2000/3000 series owners about their cars at a car show

Is this really that hard of a concept to grasp?
Year, kit, real, continuation, component, original, genuine, replica, tribute..............
Do people really NOT know the difference between past and present?
............oh, nevermind.

Having a LHD car in Australia causes more than a little curiosity and I have no problems telling any enquirers that my car was built in San Francisco by Steve Arntz in 1979. It's thirty-four years old, still looks stunning due in no small part to the efforts of its two previous owners in Washington state, and is running its original 454 Chevy with Hooker headers and a four speed Muncie box. A carbied big block with working side pipes is a rarity down here because almost all Australian Cobras are modern versions that have to comply with the restrictive Australian design rules, which dictate that a car has to comply with the registration requirements for new vehicles pertaining to the year it was first registered. Nice to know that age sometimes does have its advantages.
