Default Replica owners: How do you respond to "what year is it?"

Well, what the hell, since we 've got all these other real vs replica threads going...

I think I get asked "what year is it?' more often then I get asked "is it real?" How do you respond to that?

I usually say "it's a replica of a 1966" which kinda sounds lame and quite often gets the deer in the headlights look.

"It's a 2013 Kirkham. The car it replicates was completed in California, beginning in 1963 with production ending in early 1965."

This reply includes enough terms-completed, California, production-to encourage further conversation. Conversation is, I believe, the purpose of car shows. A trophy is icing...

"It's a replica of a 1965," or in traffic, "1965 replica".

I've never received a follow up question of "what year was your replica completed", or "what year is your replica titled as", or "what year is your replica registered as"...different answers for all 3. (2012 completition/2011mso/no reg. year in PA)

If it's this year, then I say 2013. And I pray they don't ask me to take them to my leader.

Because I'm usually driving at the time of the question or I am in a hurry to get somewhere and don't want to take the time to explain to someone that the actual year of my car is 2009, but it is a replica of a 1965 Shelby cobra, I just say 1965. It's the easy way out for me.

If I have the time to explain, then I say 2009.

I know, I know, I'm a hypocrite.

I say it's a replica of a '65 but that I finished it in 2002. It seems like usually the question is just an ice breaker leading into more specific questions, or the occasional "my uncle used to have one" type of conversation.

I got this personalized plate to help answer that question.

Obviously mine isn't really a 1965, but usually when people ask what year it is, they're really asking what type of car it is. When more knowledgeable people ask me if it's a replica, then I tell 'em the truth.

For the most part truthful answers here but a few misleading answers and a plate here too. Shame. We now know from our moderator that if you say anything other than the actual year your replica or kit was built or registered you are "lying" to the "civilian" who we all know is really asking if it's an "original" Cobra.

If asked the year of my car I truthfully answer "its a 2001 Continuation Series Shelby Cobra"

Fascinating response jhv48 especially when I read your post #123 and #141 on the For "CSX2000 & CSX3000 owners eyes only" thread.

Seems to me you could say "2009" in traffic just as easily as "1965". Just say'n. Why not tell "the truth and be done with it"?

I'm running '66 vintage plates which eliminate year questions. Thanks to the high quality and low prices of Chinese sweatshops I have been able to purchase a beautiful Breitling knock off watch with imitation diamond bezel the size of a small hubcap, a Breitling commanders cap and a Bentley windbreaker, all for under a hundred dollars. This has eliminated the "is it real?" questions. As an added bonus, not as many women threaten to call the police when they catch me staring at them. I am also sporting one of those Shelby manufacturer's plates on my dash, which a previous owner placed there and I have not removed.

You're right, I could, but then they usually look at me with a confused stare. Like I said, I'm usually in the drivers seat with the engine running at a stop light with my ear plugs in when someone shouts that question. It just takes too much yelling on my part to explain what I mean when I say 2009.

If they ask when the engine isn't running, then I explain that it is a replica of a circa 1965 cobra. Just like yours.

Believe me, I feel your pain. Hard to get into all those "confusing" explanations when your on the go. Maybe, i just say "1965" when I'm asked the year of my Cobra instead of all that confusing "Continuation" , real / original stuff.

I like it! Yea. Keep it simple!

Lol

I can see it now:

What year is your car?

It's, it's, it's a 1965, yeah, a 1965, made in 2006 but it's a 1965 yeah

No, no. We leave out the "made in 2006" part.

Keeps it simple.

No confused "civilians" and we all save time. It's a win win!

Should have thunk of this before!

Why didn't we think of this earlier? From now on all of us should just say we drive a real, original 1965 Shelby cobra.

There's more of us (replica owners) than them (the guys that own 1960's cobras). So, now the public wont be able to swing a dead cat without hitting an "original" cobra. Think of how happy we can make them. They don't know the difference anyway. Who are we to burst their bubble. Lets let them think they were actually in the presence of a historical vehicle. Win, win!

And we can all feel better about ourselves to boot!
